There has been a rise in obesity in this country for the last forty years. Many scientists and doctors have begun to question whether there is any relationship between fast food and obesity. According to the available information the number of fast food restaurants has doubled since 1970s. (Currie, J et al 2009).Currie J et al (2009) observe that the rise in the obesity cases in the last one decade has been directly related to the rise in the number of people choosing fast food as their main menu. There has been an argument that fast foods do not cause obesity rather intake of more calories than the body can consume is what leads to weight gain. Those who hold this opinion argue that environmental factors such as consumption of fast food on a regular basis may lead to weight gain and ultimately the risk of obesity but on the same note such consumption may not lead to weight gain. It has been pointed out that one can actually lose weight when they are still on such diet. This can be done through balancing the amount of calories consumed in the course of the day and what the body ultimately utilizes. If the body uses more than is usually consumed the person will lose some weight. One of the factors which one should consider in an attempt to determine whether fast food really cause obesity is to look at the lifestyle choices which might lead to this problem. For example people who have made it a habit to consume fast food for the better part of their week without engaging in other physical activities will more likely add on weight and perhaps end up being obese. On the other hand it is worth noting that consumption of other type of food especially those which are low in fats will not always lead to body weight problems.
