Gun Control…Do we need it?

Gun control again has become big issue in the last seven months. In the wake of the shootings at Sandy Hook and the Aurora movie theater in Colorado, therefore do we need gun control or not? I believe as Americans we have the right own guns and I don’t think we need gun control. I will place my arguments on concealed weapons and our rights to have guns to defend our self. The 2nd Amendment states that “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed”( Second Amendment - U.S. Constitution). So we as Americans have the right to defend ourselves so the Second Amendment says. So why are other Americans trying to take that away? Gun control advocates have their reasons why we need gun control, for instance the shootings at Sandy Hook and the theater in Colorado give them big reasons in the fight for more gun control.

Let’s start with guns for self defense “I would like to begin with the compelling story of Sarah McKinley. Home alone with her baby; she called 911 when two violent intruders began to break down her front door. The men wanted to force their way into her home so they could steal the prescription medications of her deceased husband, who had recently died of cancer. Before the police could arrive, while Ms. McKinley was on the line with the 911 operator, these violent intruders broke down her door. One of the men brandished a foot-long hunting knife. As the intruders forced their way into her home, Ms. McKinley fired her weapon, fatally wounding one of the violent attackers and causing the other to flee the scene.”(Gayle S Trotter 25-31)

What would have happen to Sarah and her baby if she didn’t have that gun? Especially if gun control advocates had their way with a ban on guns? I think that Sarah and her baby would not be alive today if we had a ban on guns. There is a fierce debate raging in 1995 gun advocacy circles over recent findings by Gary Kleck that Americans use guns to protect themselves against crime as often as one or two million times a year, which, if true, is hard to square with the common assumption of pro-control advocates that guns are not an efficacious defense against crime. (Wright, James D 63-68) So why are they still trying to ban guns? There are some statistics that may interest you “When D.C. banned handguns, homicides went up. When Chicago banned handguns, homicides went up. When Australia banned guns, violent crime went up. After Great Britain banned guns, its violent crime rate was more than four times higher than the rate in the United States. (Trotter 25-31) How people are supposed to defend themselves if there’s a ban on guns and all the criminals have them, you can’t. Passing more legislation to ban guns didn’t work in two major cities in the U.S and two world powers. Many guns are owned for self-defense and indeed some are used for that purpose, above all they certainly seem to make people feel safer.

With the way our world is going today there’s no telling if we as Americans are safe from a foreign invader. How would we defend ourselves if there was a ban on guns? Americans don’t put with crap from anybody especially from a foreign invader. Our Founding Fathers believed in the right of the people to keep and bear arms, we as Americans could fight alongside the Army to defend our nation from foreign invaders. Concealed weapons are another fight. Anti-gun activists rally around, because they don’t want people running around with concealed weapons. Although most “Anti-gun activists believe the expansion of concealed-carry permits represents a serious threat to public order” (Goldberg Atlantic Monthly p68-78). I think the killing at Sandy hook could have been stopped or at least been less carnage if an employee had been armed, along with someone carrying a concealed weapon at the theater in Aurora Colorado.
