Now a days, being an adult living in your parents’ house is common. About 27 percent of young adults in their late 20’s to early 30’s live in their parent’s homes. Certainly, it’s a satisfaction for the young adult, but for the parents it can be devastating and stressful. Majority of the time, adults return home because of a problem, such as personal or an economic problem “a good part of the adults who return home are unemployed, and doesn’t contribute economically to the family” (The Atlantic Monthly Group, 2015). If the reasoning of the adult is personal it may be because he/she is slower to mature psychologically and developmentally, they aren’t ready to go out in the world alone to take care of themselves. If this is the case, the parents may have been over functioning. Over functioning parents are the ones who “rescue, makes excuses and overprotects” (New Life, 2015). Being one of those parents, I know we use guilt to manipulate. We give them few responsibilities and we whine, complain and act the victim when they don’t cooperate with us. We ignore the warning of Proverbs 19:19 which says, “…if you rescue him you will have to do it again.” The result of this type of parenting is that our children learn they are fragile, unable to think for themselves or take care of themselves. They learn they are weak and need to lean on us in order to handle the difficulties of life. They haven’t learned how to make good decisions because we’ve been making the decisions for them. And they haven’t learned how to accept consequences for poor choices because we’ve been covering their tracks for them.
