My story Vince Lombardi once said, “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.” Always give your 100% on everything that you are determined to do. Even if the results are not what you wanted them to be, do not underestimate yourself because the most important thing is that you tried your best and that is the most important thing.
My life began to be very distinctive since the death of my father when I was about one year old. Still being a baby when he passed away was very tough for my mom to be a single parent. As I grew older I started to understand what had happened to him, however; it was really difficult to even think about it because I knew that unlike other children I did not have a father figure to rely on especially as a girl. As a single parent my mom took care of me with the help of my family, which now I am very thankful for that. Not having a dad made me look at many of my uncles and even cousins as a fatherly figure which was really good, even if they were not my dad I still knew that they loved me as much as my dad loved me. Aside from my dad passing away when I was little my life still came out to be normal and special. As I was growing up everybody used to tell me that I was a very smart girl, and that I could do anything that I wanted to do. With everybody telling me that it motivated me on setting my future goals. I wanted to get complete High School, go to college and get my own job so I can be an independent woman unlike my mom. I came to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic when I was eight years old, and after that I have been in school working hard so I can be able to accomplish my goals. Now that I am in the 12th grade I now realize that I am one step closer to making my dreams come true.
During my freshman year at High School Inc. I noticed that they offered a lot of opportunities to help prepare the students after they finish high school and I knew that it was something that I wanted to take advantage of. I my freshman year I participated in a job shadowing at Travelers Insurance, and that was when I noticed that working in a company like Travelers was something that I was interested in. After I had the opportunity to attend the job shadow we had some employees from the International Association of Black Actuaries (IABA) join us in Algebra class. At first I did not know what an actuary was until they explained it to us. An actuary is basically someone that works with numbers and manages risk. I love working with numbers so after that day hearing about Actuarial Science really got my interest. At the end of my junior year I also had the opportunity to do an internship at Travelers working in Corporate Actuarial. I meet a lot of actuaries and learned more about what they do and the requirements in becoming one. I learned that the steps in becoming an actuary are really tough and challenging. I also learned that you have to pass nine exams in order to be an Actuary. In order to study what I want to do for my career I know that I have to go to a college that has the best programs for it. I have started researching for colleges and I have found that the colleges that I really want to attend are either CCSU or UCONN, the reason why I choose those two is because I want to have a major in mathematics just in case if I change my mind of becoming an actuary while in the process of taking classes in college. Along the way throughout the years at High School Inc. I
