The evolutionary theory on the creation of man is one that forces complex theories to emerge in response to the narrow religious explanations provided the earth’s creation. Drawing on specific written works that either oppose or align with the view of Evolution will help narrow the misconceptions of Darwin’s Origin of Species and the religious scriptures that produced his scientific alternative.
To begin, genesis 1 narrates the events that occurred during the first 6 days of creation, detailing God’s manifestations including the heavens and the earth. During the first six days, God sought out to fill the earth with light, darkness, water, animals and last of all mankind. On the sixth day, after cultivating the earth, God saw it necessary to fashion a being out of his own image and likeness in order for that being to have dominion over everything from the fish of the sea to the cattle of the earth. Similarly, Genesis 2 narrates the events that occurred beyond the 6th day including the creation of woman and the abilities granted to man. God created man by forming dust from the ground and breathing the breath of life into his nostrils. After creating man, God placed him in the Garden of Eden where man would see a river split four ways, each new river encompassing a name; Pison, Gihon, Hiddekel and Euphrates. Later, while Adam was sleeping God took one of his ribs and created a woman for Adam. The Aztec civilization of the Mayans, Inuits and Incans also promotes a conceptualized creationist idea of man. In Mayan Culture the makers were concerned with creating beings that had the intelligence to properly worship them as gods, and to ensure their religion would be passed on to generations to come. The Maker had an overarching purpose that dictated the makers’ dealings with man.
The Church of Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM), also referred to as Rastafarianism, focuses on providing an alternative view on religion and the Creationist understanding of man all while opposing the institutionalized design of religion. Bobby Henderson, inventor of the religion, sought out to challenge the idea of creationism and evolution taught in public institutions. He did this by mocking institutionalized religion and proposing the teaching of his “noodly appendage” as a better suited alternative, which now serves as the caricature of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Many people who opposed the idea of intelligent design in public schools adopted the Flying Spaghetti monster as a satirical alternative.
Darwin’s Origin of Species contradicts against these theories because it is an extended argument advocating for the belief that species were not created independently by God, but instead that they evolved from one another. Darwin argues his theory through natural selection and struggle for existence. Darwin’s Origin of Species analyzes various issues including Laws of Variation, Hybridism, and Adaptation through a biological standpoint. Though Darwin’s Species of Origin contradicts the creationist views upheld in Genesis and the Mayan civilizations, it is undeniable that comparisons can be drawn, by analyzing aspects of each theories scheme, including rejection of Intellectual Design, Conception of plants and organisms before Man, and the promotion of procreation amongst species.
Based on the proclamations in The Origin of Species, we know that Darwin rejected Genesis as true history by asserting that different species originated by deliberate process of evolution. Darwin also did not agree that plants and other aspects of earth were commanded by God. Nonetheless, Genesis and The Origin of Species coincide in the unifying belief that organisms or plant were present on earth well before the creation of man. The Genesis scripture states that the first biological forms of life upon the Earth were plants; “And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, who see is in
