Cancer and the Three Most Common
The study of cancer, called oncology, is the work of countless doctors and scientists around the world whose discoveries in anatomy, physiology, chemistry, epidemiology, and other related fields made oncology what it is today. Technological advances and the increasing understanding of cancer make this field one of the most rapidly evolving areas of modern medicine. Cancer is nothing to play with. It comes in 3 to 4 stages. 1 being the lightest but 4 being the very worst case scenario. Cancer is evolving more and more every day, the 3 most common cancers are breast, lung and, colorectal.
In today’s world Cancer is becoming a leading cause of death, “Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. About one-half of all men and one-third of all women in the US will develop cancer during their lifetimes. Today, millions of people are living with cancer or have had cancer.”(American Cancer Society). It is a shame that cancer is evolving this much in our society.
The background behind cancer is rather simple but, rather hard to understand why it that no one can catch it at an early stage before it spreads. “All cancers begin in cells, the body's basic unit of life. To understand cancer, it is helpful to know what happens when normal cells become cancer cells. The body is made up of many types of cells. These cells grow and divide in a controlled way to produce more cells as they are needed to keep the body healthy. When cells become old or damaged, they die and are replaced with new cells. However, sometimes this orderly process goes wrong. The genetic material (DNA) of a cell can become damaged or changed, producing mutations that affect normal cell growth and division. When this happens, cells do not die when they should and new cells form when the body does not need them. The extra cells may form a mass of tissue called a tumor.” (National Cancer Institute)(National Cancer Institute March 7, 2014, February 2, 2015). Here is the information given about what and how cancer is. But, there are more cancer types than you can count on your hands and toes.
There are more than 100 types of Cancer, as stated in a web article, “There are as many different types of cancer as there are different types of human cell - just over 200.
However, cancers can be broadly grouped into different types, depending on which tissues they come from.
Carcinomas, the most common types of cancer, arise from the cells that cover external and internal body surfaces. Lung, breast, and colon are the most frequent cancers of this type.
Sarcomas are cancers arising from cells found in the supporting tissues of the body such as bone, cartilage, fat, connective tissue and muscle.
Lymphomas are cancers that arise in the lymph nodes and tissues of the body's immune system.
Leukaemias are cancers of the immature blood cells that grow in the bone marrow and tend to accumulate in large numbers in the bloodstream.
These terms often have prefixes that describe exactly what type of cell the cancer originated from. For example, an osteosarcoma is a cancer of the bone.” (UK)(Cancerresearchuk.org 25 September 2009, February 2, 2015). As our world begins to revolve more and more on updated technology, things become more and clear. Soon, doctors might be able to do quick test on people to determine what has gone wrong and where. Cancer is evolving more and more every day, the 3 most common cancers are breast, lung and, colorectal.
Lung cancer is the number one killer in today’s world. Lung cancer is more common with males than females. “Lung cancer was the most common cancer worldwide in men contributing nearly 17% of the total number of new cases diagnosed in 2012.” (World Cancer Research Fund International). This quote is showing proof of a statistic that men are more likely than women to catch lung cancer. Lung cancer is, “Lung cancer is the uncontrolled growth of
