Effective Leadership in the Workplace What is leadership? Leadership or being a leader can be described in many different ways, but overall it means having to capacity to lead. In every business or organization they become effective and remain effective because of their leaders and their ability to inspire and lead. “Leadership has nothing to do with seniority or one’s position in the hierarchy of a company. Too many talk about a company’s leadership referring to the senior most executives in the organization. They are just that, senior executives. Leadership doesn’t automatically happen when you reach a certain pay grade. Hopefully you find it there, but there Communication is key for a manager as we covered and revisited multiple times throughout this course. When in a managerial position you have to think before you speak or send an email. What are you trying to say to your employees? “Your real message may be stated in a simple sentence, or may require many pages of explanation.” (Pace, p. 71). Being able to clearly and concisely give direction to your employees so they clearly understand you is extremely important. Another imperative aspect of being an effective leader is in general having healthy lines of communications on all levels. An effective leader communicates on all levels as he or she is involved with and works on all levels. You have to have dynamic communication skills in order to communicate with your boss, your employees, and even your boss’s boss, all depending. Early on in my Naval Career my first boss, LCDR Mario Plummer, told me “that he did not want to brief the Commanding Officer unless it was something crucial that should only be heard from him, so be prepared to go talk to the old man a lot because I will not.” The first few times where rocky, but once I received a little more mentoring from LCDR Plummer, he told me that the Commanding Officer enjoys getting updates from me because he can see that I am progressing into a successful Naval Officer. I
