Earthquake in Haiti Relief Efforts
Derek Brown
Grantham University On January 12, 2010, the island of Hispaniola was struck by a major earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale. Though the exact numbers will never be known, estimates placed the death toll at over 200,000 peoples and over 300,000 were injured. When disasters of this magnitude occur, disaster relief efforts should begin immediately, such as rescue efforts, providing food and water, building temporary housing structures to name a few. Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs) play a vital role in humanitarian relief efforts. In situations like such as in the earthquake in Haiti, military, NGOs and local officials should meet immediately to form a control crisis center where all relief effort coordination should take place and mini center should be also established in areas throughout the affected area, with coordination orchestrated through the control crisis center, in doing so, all concerned can be advised of relief efforts; all should be playing from the same sheet of music, so to say. In Haiti, there were many lessons learned in which the need for the international community to engage more effectively with other key stakeholders, such as the military, local officials and other NGOs . As in the Doctors without Borders complained that the military presence at times actually interfered with the distribution of humanitarian aid. There could of been better communication with regard to reconstruction efforts; the failure of reconstruction left hundreds of thousands trapped in camps, susceptible to storms, disease, and violence brought on by frantic conditions. In my
major earthquake desolated Haiti in January, 12 2010 at 4:35 pm. the magnitude of this earthquake was about 7 struck south-east of Haiti. This earthquake caused major damages affecting about 5.4 million people. Haiti’s worst quake in two centuries hit south of the capital port-au-prince on Tuesday, wrecking the presidential palace, United Nations and other buildings. a large number of united nations members were reported missing by the organization. The Red Cross informs that at least three million…
Earthquakes create a very traumatic disaster not only for the area affected but also for other surrounding areas. On a regular basis, earthquakes tend to occur by the thousands on an everyday basis! Most earthquakes occur where tectonic plates collide into each other. As the collisions take place underground, it creates a lot of stress. Once that stress is released, it sends a load of vibrations underground, called seismic waves. When rating earthquakes scientists use the strength and duration of…
location. For example, Haiti was warned by Paul Mann (a famous geologist) that a catastrophic earthquake could happen there, despite this Haiti lacked the sufficient resources to be able to deal with such warnings. The residents of Haiti, especially Port au Prince would agree that it was the lack of preparation that made the earthquake a lot more devastating than it could have been, however Haiti was already reliant 30% on international aid of their GDP even before the earthquake, despite this they would…
“Earthquakes have a greater impact when they happen in poorer parts of the world” Discuss Earthquakes are a natural phenomena that, when occurring near civilisation, can and almost always do cause grief and harm to those caught in the shock waves or after effects. The severity of impacts from earthquakes are obviously dependent on the countries that are affected; for example a richer, but more densely populated and constructed country can suffer significantly more than a poorer, but more sparsely…
can be single-handedly wiped out when a single event occurs (Wisner 2006, 6). The sudden spate of disastrous earthquakes in the Americas cause concerns. Within a span of 45 days, two earthquakes hit Haiti and Chile. An earthquake, measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale, rocked Haiti on January 12, 2010, knocking down buildings and power lines and killing over 200,000 people. While the earthquake that devastated Chile, measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale on February 27 was 500 times more powerful; yet the…
system of a country can determine how its government and citizens handle varying situations. We will discuss with economic system might be best for handling an epic crisis, how a socialistic system could have been the best for dealing with the earthquake in Haiti and why the cost of heating our homes goes up at certain times of the year. The economic system best suited for handling an epic crisis might be socialism. Socialism is the ownership of resources primarily by the government but also involves…
Haiti In 2010 an Earth quake left the city of Port-Au-Prince in Haiti devastated. The aid received by Haiti has focused on both short term and long term effects of the disaster. The response to the 2010 Haiti earthquake included national governments, charitable and for-profit organizations from around the world which began coordinating humanitarian aid designed to help the Haitian people. Some countries arranged to send relief and rescue workers and humanitarian supplies directly to the earthquake…
two disasters: the 2010 Haiti earthquake vs. the 2011 Japan earthquake Introduction & overview (including overall ‘thesis/main argument’) Para 1: In January 2010, a devastating earthquake struck Haiti. A year and 2 months later, on March, 2011, a much bigger earthquake devastated northern Japan. Although both earthquakes happened on a weekday in the afternoon, there is little similarity between two events and how two countries have recovered. The Haiti earthquake was the biggest quake to…
Did you know that largest earthquake ever that we have evidence on had a magnitude of 9.5 in Chile on May 22,1960 (Life Science)? Or did you know the deadliest earthquake on January 23,1556 took place in Shansi, China while 830,000 people were estimated to have died (Life Science)? Earthquakes are very dangerous and have been around for many years, and are still occurring today. An earthquake is a very sudden feeling of the ground starting to shake then other objects start to as well. Objects will…
I have always wondered what life on other Caribbean islands is like and whether or not they are mostly the same. My dad came from Jamaica so I have a good idea of what life is like on the islands, and I wanted to see if the same could be said in Haiti. Once I started the interview I found that there are some similarities when it comes to islands in the Caribbean but there are also some very large differences. You would think that someone who grew up in NYC would already have a good understanding…
