Did you know that largest earthquake ever that we have evidence on had a magnitude of 9.5 in Chile on May 22,1960 (Life Science)? Or did you know the deadliest earthquake on January 23,1556 took place in Shansi, China while 830,000 people were estimated to have died (Life Science)? Earthquakes are very dangerous and have been around for many years, and are still occurring today. An earthquake is a very sudden feeling of the ground starting to shake then other objects start to as well. Objects will start to fall and break. It is caused by a sudden slip on a fault. Stresses in the earth’s outer layers push the sides of the faults together, stress builds up in the rocks and starts to slip and while that happens it’s also releasing energy in waves that travel through the earth’s crust (USGS; Science for a Changing). Even though There is a lot of other things in the world scientists need to worry about also , Earthquakes could be prevented if scientists put more time into researching because Scientists do not put a lot of time into researching and Scientists should be able to know by now when they’re going to happen, they can tell when tornados are going to happen, and storms. Earthquakes are global concerns in many ways, they can trigger swarms of minor earthquakes near wastewater-injection wells like the ones that are used in oil and gas recoveries. When a catastrophic earthquake hit Haiti on January 12th, 2010 it killed more than 20,000 people and left 1.5 million people homeless (Thomson Reuters Foundation). That is a lot of the population affected due to an earthquake. Ever since the devastating news about the earthquake that had hit in Haiti on January 12th, followed by others in Chile, Baja California, and Indonesia, many people keep asking the same question “Are these earthquakes going to ever get better?” and the answer is NO (CNN). When the earthquake in Haiti happened in 2010, 4,992 schools were affected, That equals 23% of schools. The magnitude of this earthquake was 7.0, and was the most powerful earthquake to hit in 200 years. It has been four years since this earthquake and there are still nearly 150,000 people living in tents and shelters (Thomas Reuters Foundation). Since they have all come to the conclusion that we cannot prevent these earthquakes from happening they thought of something else they could do to help. They have built new structures that are earthquake sensitive areas designed to sustain earthquakes without any danger of collapsing. But if the condition of these structures had been changed perhaps by damage of the structure then the effect on earthquakes will be altered. Scientists are working on ways to predict earthquakes that will happen in advance since all the disaster they cause. They think that if they can predict where an earthquake will take place they can encourage of the residents staying in that area to evacuate, or take very safe measures. Today seismographs tell geologists when seismic waves have already begun, that lets them know that stronger waves are on their way (TNO DIANA).
