Dyslexia was first described by an English physician Oswald Berkhan almost a century ago and as per his research, and it affects five to seventeen percent of the population at that time. The term of Dyslexia is characterized by difficulty with learning to read fluently and with accurate comprehension despite normal intelligence. Even though, Dyslexia is the most recognized of reading problems, not all reading problems are linked to dyslexia. Therefore many students struggle to succeed in college.
Over the years, among dyslexic people the need of succeed have grown. And this is due to the discrimination that they have to face in their everyday life. To show themselves how far they can go upon their disability and to reveal people they can do better than the disability. “A growing group of students with dyslexia enter higher education” (Identifying students with dyslexia in higher education 1), new strategies are been used by schools so they can reach their maximum. Also, they are trying to standardized the dyslexic diagnosis so they can further and enter college. Teachers are focusing on their strengths so they can focus on their talent as the articlean eye for the unusual: creative thinking in dyslexics, describes that in order to understand dyslexic, a deep research based on their abilities and creative thinking is expressed. Dyslexics, showed in this study that, even though, they are not proficient in reading and writing, they are capable and gifted people by visual skills, creativity handedness. It is important to note how smart they can be over their disability, and they focus on that. Moreover, dyslexia is a linguistic problem and is no linked to intellectual disabilities nor cultural depravation.The basic cause of dyslexia is still not known, however, much research is being done to determine the problems underlying dyslexia. In many cases, dyslexia is highly inherited. A group of researchers at the Yale School Medicine have shown that a deficiency on genes may set the stage for its development (What is dyslexia, What causes Dyslexia?).Dyslexia is caused by neurological problems and can also be genetic, and is developed during the first six months of gestation. The International Dyslexia Association states that “Dyslexia is one of the problems that affect15% to 20% of the kids in the United States of America” (What is dyslexia, What causes Dyslexia?) Although many people with dyslexia may not be noticeable, it can really sneak up on you. Most of the time kids with dyslexia aren't recognized until they are about eight or nine. Even though, over time the symptoms can be fine-tuned, they never go completely away. Dyslexia is not a disease and it cannot be cured with any pill or medicine. Dyslexia is a brain malfunctioning, a neurological problem that delays the reading.For individuals with dyslexia prognosis varies enormously. Dyslexia affects such a wide range of people, producing different symptoms and varying degrees of severity, that predicting individual outcomes is extremely difficult. Outcomes tend to be better for people who are diagnosed early and receive effective support from professionals and family members. Psychologists and teaching experts emphasize that helping the child maintain good self-esteem and self-image is vital.
The University of Montreal, compared good adult readers to dyslexic adult readers. In most cases the adult dyslexics were at about the high school level. When the adult dyslexics were compared to third graders in matching sounds with letters, they scored below the eight and nine year olds that were tested. They do not have a visual problem, actually they can see the letters fine, and itis more on the brain. They are not able to process the reading information in a correct manner. Usually, dyslexics cannot spell simple words by just hearing someone speak to them. They need to be teaching at ease so they can have a better understanding of what is explained to them.
