Billboard That Creates Drinkable Water Out of Thin Air
In Lima, Peru an engineering University has equipped the city with a billboard that produces drinkable water out of thin air. The billboard produces 26 gallons a day from nothing more than humidity and a filtration system. That might not seem like much to you and me, but let me tell you a little bit about the city of Lima first. Lima is the largest city in Peru with a population of 7.6 million, even more if you add in the surrounding metro area. It is part of the costal desert of Atacama, the driest desert in the world, so the city only sees about half an inch of rainfall a year. With lack of rainfall to supply water to the city, Lima depends on drainage from the Andes and runoff from glacier melt, sources that are on the decline recently. That’s where the University of Engineering and Technology of Peru came into play by providing them with the billboard. The people of Lima get their water from wells and it’s not that clean or sanitary. The billboard provides a lot fresher and cleaner water. The billboard takes the humidity from the air, which on average is about 83%, and runs it through a series of filters and a condenser. The water then runs down the billboard to a holding tank at its base where you can find an easily accessible faucet. The billboard produced 2,500 gallons in just three months, which equals the consumption of hundreds of families in a month. If a bunch of these could be strategically placed throughout the city that 26 gallons a day would provide plenty of water for its inhabitants. Not only in Lima, but this innovation could be an important asset for troubled spots around the world that are in need of potable water. This innovation has a positive effect on the local society. Water to us here in the United States is something that we don’t really worry about at all. It’s just something that we have and think we will always have so why should we worry about it. In troubled areas like Lima however the small amount of water that the billboard produces probably means the world to them and I imagine they are very grateful to have it. As I said before the people of Lima have to get their water from wells deep in the ground. People in the U.S. would think it’s silly and old school to see somebody pulling a bucket full of water out of a well. With a bunch of these billboards placed around the city it could have a great impact on allowing the people to save time obtaining water. I don’t know about you but I would rather fill my bucket up with a faucet then have to send it down a well and pull it back up a few times. Another positive effect it could have on the society is its sanitary value. The video on the article stated that the water the people get from the wells isn’t that clean or sanitary. So the clean water produced by the billboards could allow for the people of the city to be healthier and a less chance of viruses and diseases that could be lurking in the dirty water. An overall healthier population allows for less money to have to be spent on medicine that would be used to cure the sicknesses. It could also allow for more production in the work place with everybody healthier. Something else to think about relates to what normal billboards primary focus is, advertisement. This technologically advanced billboard may not be advertising anything but it could target young people of the community seeking careers in engineering. Yea some people will just drive by and be thankful for it, but there are others who will be thinking of ways that they could improve the efficiency of the billboard or maybe ways to better distribute the water. So not only would the billboard be producing water it could also be encouraging people to improve it. Politically the billboard could have and even greater impact on the community. I keep talking about putting a bunch more of the billboards up throughout the
Economics and Water Scarcity Econ Assignment According to Survey of Economics, economics is “ the study of choices when there is scarcity”(Sullivan, Sheffrin & Perez, 2012). Scarcity is a concept that is very familiar to some cultures, but not others. Here in the United States we have a culture of not appreciating the resources we have. Economics looks closer at these resources and the choices that humans make to determine the future of these resources. One scarcity problem that affects…
4/18/10 Urban Environmental Paper Las Vegas Water Use There have been many urban environmental issues spread across the world throughout the years. Las Vegas water usage is one of the many urban environmental problems that occur in the United States today. Las Vegas has been experiencing water problems for many years now and if the climate trends continue to stay the same the largest water source in Las Vegas could potentially dry out. This water source contributes to most of the casino’s and…
The Use of Water Global water consumption is a growing concern in the world today. The un-necessary amount of water that is being used in the United States today is limiting the availability of water to others around the world. This problem is causing many deaths of dehydration and disease that is being passed through the unfiltered water. Since drinkable and consumable water is a limited resource it is important for people to realize the value of water. 10% of the drinkable water on earth is…
owner is only reasonable for the land for approximately 30 years. Take the bags for example, they only last for 30-50 years so once they break and the trash contaminants the water, who’s to blame? There isn’t very much drinkable water left and the little we have left is going to be ruined by landfills. There’s so much water ruined by our trash and it just doesn’t affect us it kills fish which other animals use as food so then they start to die off. Pretty soon our surroundings are totally different…
3/18/2015 Water Borne Diseases: A Danger to Us Water borne diseases is a serious issue that has been reported for many years. Contaminated drinking water was stated to be the source of waterborne diseases that kills more people than viruses alone. Some symptoms of these diseases are diarrhea, fever, and can lead to more severe cases. Water borne diseases is a serious problem and it needs to be dealt with. Water borne diseases are illnesses that are caused by unclean or contaminated water that can…

happened in the past. One major benefit of global warming would be more drinkable water that’s hidden inside the polar caps. Most of the Earth’s total water, 97.5 percent, is salty and undrinkable oceans. That leaves 2.5 percent of the Earth’s total water as fresh. 99.6 percent of all that fresh water is locked up at the polar ice caps, hidden as groundwater or trapped as permafrost. Which means only .4 percent of the total fresh water on the planet is actually available for human use. Therefore, the result…
paper is to educate people more about osmosis; so that they will be able to recognize it and appreciate it in their household appliances, and to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of osmosis. A popular use of osmosis is water purification. This happens by using a domain’s water pressure to push it through a semi-permeable membrane, and performs osmosis. Osmosis is when a solvent of low concentration solute solution moves through a membrane to get to a higher concentration solution, thus weakening…
115 December 8 2103 "Water" The name water seems simple enough to many, but this source that we take for granted is the building blocks of a strong and growing communite, one that needs plentiful and clean water at that. We need water to live, but it has to be clean but we are at a stage where we are struggling to resolve the promblem of a water crisis. The global warming that has been damgning are enviorment are also affecting are…
For my climate change projection I decided to do New York because it is one of the largest cities in the world. Tourist all across the world travel to New York just to see how beautiful it is and to get a firsthand look at some of the great sightings. By doing this research I was able to find that seasons will be changing. Spring will be arriving anywhere from 1-2weeks earlier or even up to 3 weeks later. Growing season will be stretched out by 4 weeks or even up to up to 6 weeks longer. Summer…
