1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued?

The "Diversity" (2013) website defines diversity as “the condition of having or being composed of differing elements.” Diversity is valued because it brings different perspectives on life especially in America. Diversity is what makes America and having so much of it, it brings countries stranght and uniqueness. Diversity leads to growth in any society.

2. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society?

The “Ethnocentric” (2013) website defines ethnocentric as “characterized by or based on the attitude that one's own group is superior.” It seems that it has always had negative effects on society and in the world. It can be viewed as many social problems in society. There is a lot of pride because of this and it results in seeing ones self as a higher superior to others and their cultures.

3. Define emigration and immigration.

Emigration is “leaving a country to settle in another” (Schaefer, 2013, P.19).
Immigration is “coming into a new country as a permanent resident” (Schaefer, 2013, P.19). Those people who emigrate to any new country, tend to see themselves as the minority. In any type of movement, there are two sets of forces that operate, the push factors and the pull factors.

4. What are some of the ways groups of people are identified?

There are four ways in which groups can be identified, race, ethnicity, religion, and gender. This is how the minority groups are classified by. “A minority or subordinate group has five characteristics: unequal treatment, distinguishing physical or cultural traits, involuntary membership, awareness of subordination, and ingroup marriage” (Schaefer, 2013, P. 6). “Age, disability status, physical appearance, and sexual orientation are among some other factors that are used to subordinate groups of people” (Schaefer, 2013, P. 10).
