• What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?
Discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons (Schaefer, 2012). Discrimination differs from prejudice and stereotyping because prejudice is when someone has formed their own opinion about someone, prejudice then turns into stereotyping. Stereotyping is believing that everyone is the same and having an inaccurate way of looking at someone or something. Both of these lead to discrimination and this is noticing there is a difference in someone or something this starts by prejudice treatment and leads to actual behavior towards a person or group of people.
• What are the causes of discrimination?
There is no proven cause of discrimination, in my own opinion I believe that it is learned behavior one learns from childhood. One is not born with prejudice, or discriminating against another that is a behavior or thought that is taught. There are many different reasons people can discriminate some are race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or even a disability. Sometimes discrimination can get so bad it can lead to hate crimes, this usually happens when a certain race feels they are better than another. An example of this would be when the KKK would go and burn crosses on the African Americans lawn.
