Developing Effective Communication in the Health and Social Care
Task M1

Part 1
The communication cycle is a theory that is described as a two way process in which each person tries to understand the view point of the other person. Communication is a cycle because when two people communicate they need to check that their ideas have been understood.
Aiming is the first stage of the cycle this is involves an idea that has been occurred and wants to be communicated. This applies to the case study e.g. when aiming information the MDT were not clear to Mrs Singh as they were using medical terminology which she couldn’t understand and also her minimal of English made it hard for her to understand any information that was being shared with her. The MDT meeting did well with their aiming was; setting up a meeting altogether with different health and social care professionals to also have ideas to help Mrs Singh with her health. However they could of improved on using less medical terminology to break it down and make it a lot easier for Mr and Mrs Singh to understand.
Encoding is the thought of how you are going to say what your idea is and how you’re going to communicate whether its verbally or non-verbally. The multi-displinary chose to have a meeting this an effective where to communicate because can come face to face with one another answer question especially if someone like Mrs Singh is old and isn’t familiar with up to date technology like being able to use a laptop and email. However the meeting wasn’t effective because of how the proximity of the room was laid out Mr and Mrs Singh were put on low chairs which were just about at the table level making it hard for them to see everyone and make eye contact as well as the health professionals. They should have been more organized and provided hand outs to Mr and Mrs Singh to help them to be able to communicate better and understand.
Transmitting is the third stage of the cycle this involves when you have decided how to communicate whether it’s verbally or non-verbal. This was a good for Mrs Singh to receive information on what health and social care professional was going to do to help her recovery and also how they are going to be involved in her care package. This was not effective in the meeting because there were environmental noises which caused an distraction to the meeting making difficult for everyone to hear each other e.g. the ward nurses were having to raise their voices to be heard because of the noises coming from the room. In order to make this effective they should have organized a different room and have less irrelevant staff at the meeting to minimise negativity e.g. the ward nurses and the doctor.
Receiving involves when a person can sense there is a message coming by hearing words or symbols messages. What they did well was applying their body gestures and eye contact to Mrs Singh make sure she is able to understand that they are addressing her with information .Within the case study we see that Mrs Singh is being unable to sense messages because of the distractions in the room and her understanding of English affects to have reflective listening to seem that she is understanding and participating in the meeting. In future they should have used more diagrams and pictures to eliminate less verbal communication as it was difficult for Mrs Singh to understand and to hear because of the environmental noises and the lack of English she can understand.
Decoding is fourth part of the cycle this involves when the other person has decoded the message; however this is not always easy as the other person can make assumptions about your words and body language. This was not effective in the case study because Mrs Singh gestures looked bewildered through the entire meeting and also lost as they just nod their heads without giving any verbal any feedback on their behalf. What they did well was by asking Mrs Singh if she understood and would agree to the care
