The year was 1995 and the New Jersey Devils were playing the Red Wings in the play offs for the Stanley Cup. The Devils had never played the Red Wings before the playoffs because of a shortened schedule due to a lockout earlier in the year. Lisa who was thirty two at the time was a huge Devils fan. Her husband Joe was given tickets to the sold out fourth game in the play offs from a coworker who could not attend the game. He accepted the tickets and told Lisa about the game on Saturday night. She was excited they got the tickets but people were offering Lisa and Joe $300-$400 for the tickets. The money sounded good and they thought the chances of the Devils winning that game were slim because they had just won three games in a row. On the other hand they thought of how amazing it would be to actually be there when the won their first Stanley cup ever. She said the money sounded good but the option of seeing her favorite hockey team win completely outweighed the money that was offered. They decided to go Lisa and her husband got there around six o’clock when the doors opened to go in and sit down. “It was a madhouse” she said as they tried to get in and find their seats. When they got to their seats they were on the second level center ice. These were great seats especially because they were in the first row of their section, therefor there was no one in front of them. When they looked over the railing they realized they were sitting right above the announcers on television. This was to their benefit because if they wanted to see a replay on anything all they had to do was look at the announcer’s television screens so they never missed a play. Another benefit to these seats were that in-between periods they interview players so they put a big screen up that blocked their view and the announcers felt bad so they gave them each a free puck from the game which they still have in their house today in a case. The Devils scored a couple goals right off the bat approximately 68 seconds into the first period was the first goal to be exact and everyone was so excited. The first goal was scored by Broten. “The atmosphere wasn’t tense it was more of a celebration because the way they were playing everyone expected the win” she said with a smile on her face as she reminisced. There were 19,040 people at the game. She felt as if all of New Jersey came to this game because of how crowded and noisy it was, but she liked it that way. In between period’s strangers were high fiving each other chanting and hugging. It was like for once everyone was united and nice to each other for no reason.
