Determining Your Perfect Position
Introduction
Whittle Toy Company, which is a manufacture of small wooden toy trains is expanding the factory and will be hiring new employees to fill five different departments within factory. With the new expansion I have been provided the opportunity to determine which position I would fit in based on my leadership style and my abilities that I can bring to the organization. To help decide the position that I would like to work in, I will determine my role so that I will best benefit the company and be successful in the new position based on the way that I work, the method that I lead and my skills. The new position that I have decided to work in is the factory manager. This position oversees all five of the factory departments and works closely with the department managers on a daily basis. The reason I opted for this position is based on my leadership style, the democratic leadership style. This position will be one that I would need to work with each of the different department managers. Within each department the managers will have their ideas and input that will need to be report to the main factory manager to help make sure the factory is staying productive and maintaining orders. As the factory manager I would like the input of the managers to help make the correct decisions based on what their reports and information shows as well as tells me to help ensure the best possible outcome for the organization. Leadership Style – Strengths & Weaknesses The democratic leadership style is closest to the style of leading that I prefer, I like to coach people where I am able to help develop who they are and show them how to improve their own performance. While working as the manager of the factory, I will have this ability – to help the managers improve their performance as well as coach them into making the best decision for their departments. This can be a positive for the democratic leadership style as it helps to create positive relationships between employees and their managers. With the democratic leadership style it can help to encourage the employees to take a part in the decision making within their departments, which is a positive as the employee will know from experience what works best in their own position that they work on a daily basis. The democratic leadership style helps to boost employee morale which in turn increases job satisfaction by involving employees or team members in what's going on, but it also help to develop people's skills. Employees and team members feel in control of their own destiny, such as the promotion they deserve and so are motivated to work hard by more than just a financial reward (Bhatti, Ghulam, & Shaikh, 2012, p. 192). With this leadership style, I would still be considered the leader or factory manager where I would still hold the final say but would be able to gather information from other key employees before having to make a final decision. Having the ability to gather this information and input from other employees helps to create a relationship between the employees and managers, it helps to bring the organization together as a team. This style works best for me as I like to gain the approval of the other employees, as well as their ideas to what will work out best for their departments and maintain the best relationship with them but at the same time be the main leader that makes the final decision. When working with others, I enjoy encouraging them, using the democratic leadership style and working with the employees I will be able to encourage them and have the ability to see them succeed at what they are doing. This makes me believe that I am performing my role as a manager if the employee makes a positive impact on the company.
