To drill or not to drill? Whether or not to continue drilling in other countries has been the leading topic for debate for many years now. Some argue that the United States should decrease their dependence on outsourcing oil from other countries and explore alternative options, while others argue this change would be too expensive. Power delivered through a plug to a hybrid's battery will propel the car at least four times as far as the same amount of energy pumped into the tank as gasoline, which currently retails for about $100 per barrel, says Huber and Mills (2005). When the United States buys oil from other countries, not only do they buy the oil, they also make “deals” and “promises.” When the U.S. does not hold up their end of the deal or promise, the other country decides they want to hike up the prices or worst, a war begins. The price of oil has fluctuated wildly over the past several decades, thanks largely to the volatile politics of the Middle East, as noted by Huber and Mills (2005). That is when we the consumers feel it in our wallets. Everyone is affected by these actions and it creates an all-around uneasy environment. The country we buy from feels they have the upper hand. Knowing how much the U.S. depends on this resource. Cohen says, dependence on oil destroys the environment, starts war, and adds both poverty and corruption (Cohen 2003). I must say that I agree with Cohen. I understand that it may cost a lot of money in the beginning to get alternative sources tested and set up. In the long run it will be beneficial to U.S. because we would not be depending on any other country, nor would we owe any other countries, therefore it would create less reason for disagreement/war. Conformity comes to mind when I think of the potential perceptual blocks that could hinder my thinking when trying to understand the opposing side of this topic.
