Obesity Speech
Introduction-
As a college student, it is so hard to make a “healthy” meal daily. It is so much easier to just go out and buy food, instead of taking the time to cook yourself a healthy dinner. I decided to choose obesity as my topic because I have always been interested in living a healthy lifestyle, and exercising.
In the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the U.S. & the rates still remain high. The laziness of Americans & the convenience of fast food restaurants is the reason majority of our society is obese. 35.7% of adults are obese or overweight, and 20-25% of children are obese. Michigan has one of the higher obesity rates with it being a little over 30%. I am going to talk about what obesity is, what the contributing factors of it are, and how it can affect your health.

What is Obesity?
The definition of Obesity is having excess body fat, IT IS NOT THE SAME as being overweight, which means weighing too much. A person can be overweight from having extra muscle, bone or water as well as fat.
Your body fat percentage is important. A certain amount is necessary for storing energy, heat insulation, shock absorption, and other functions.
Obesity is defined by using your body mass index. The BMI is a method of screening for weight categories that may lead to health problems. It is calculated using a person’s height and weight.
What are the contributing factors?
The most common causes of obesity are overeating & lack of physical activity. According to the physicians weight loss center the diet of obese people is the number 1 problem. Too many calories along with large amounts of sugars, oils, and fats are the leading cause of obesity. Also skipping breakfast, eating a lot of fast food, consuming high calorie drinks such as Snapple, rock star energy drinks, Sunkist and even certain types of beer. Eating oversized portions allows your stomach to get used to consuming that much food at once, which eventually becomes a normal amount of food.
The 2nd is their lifestyle. Most obese people generally have a sedentary lifestyle, which means there is very little exercise and consists of mostly sitting. The lack of exercise causes your calorie intake and burning calories to be uneven and contributes to the excessive weight gain. 80% of adults don’t get the amount of exercise that is recommended.
The 3rd is genetics. Your body weight is the result of metabolism, genetics, environment, behavior, and culture. Most obese people usually have a parent that is obese, the parents eating habits and daily lifestyle are usually passed on to their kids. It is a proven fact that you CAN overcome your genetics by obtaining an exercise and diet plan.
The 4th is laziness. Most American families eat out 4 to 5 times a week!!! Like
