CYP core 3.1 – Understand Child and Young person development

1.1 Explain the sequence and rate of each aspect of development from birth to 19 years.

Physical

During the period of 0 - 4 a child will learn to see properly, hold their head up straight, sit up, crawl, talk, walk, and recognise and build relationships With the people closest to them. During the age range of 4 - 7 a child will have learnt thousands of word and will be using them to string together large sentences. The child will become much more physical i.e. running, jumping, and standing on one leg etc. Between the ages of 7 and all years a child will be expected to of developed skills in sports and more advanced exercise i.e. swimming and team sport. Towards the later stage of this period a child’s hormonal state will also begin to change. Between 11 and 13 years, this stage of adolescence there is an awful lot going on. At the early stage of this age group a child will be going through hormonal change i.e. puberty which has an emotional, physical and social affect also added pressure in the way of starting new schools and meeting new people Between 13 and 19 years this period of a young person’s life there will be a lot of experimenting and curiosity, with thing like alcohol, drugs, and sexual behaviour. Physical growth will be very visible as children in this age group often have growth spurts. At this time health risks will become more apparent too due to eating habits, alcohol, sex, and drugs.

Communication

Before an infant is able to talk they will develop communication skills in the way of crying to let you know that they are hungry in pain need changing etc. By the age of
6 months the infant will answer to their name and that they are an individual. During this period the child’s language abilities will broaden massively starting with noises leading to words leading to short sentences and so on. There is no definite point in a child’s development when this should happen as all children are different and develop at an individual pace. Between the ages of 4 and 7 years, a Childs ability to hold conversation with peers and adults will increase; the young person will remember, have reasoning and understand emotions. Children of this age group will have a much larger vocabulary due to been in education. Physical and mental abilities such as coordination, balance, agility, and motor skills i.e. writing and drawing will also help with communication. Between 7 to 11 years. Children around this age will, through communication, form stronger bonds and relationship with peer especially of the same sex. Children will start to feel the need to have friends and become more distant from family as they start to experience peer pressure to do with image, eating habits etc.11 to 13 years, during this period vocabulary will have increased massively to over 40.000 words, almost double that of an 8 to 9 year old. Friends will be chosen by the individual based on common interests, and in cases of the opposite sex attraction as due to puberty they will notice changes physical and emotionally, ratter then having friends due to pedant selection.13 to 19 years, during this period teenagers communicate more like adults maturing as they go through high school. As young adults they should be able to comprehend abstract language such as idioms, figurative language, and metaphors. Explanations become more figurative and less literal. Teens should understand punctuation, and be able to process texts and abstract meaning, and relate word meaning and contexts. As a teen begins to gain their own identity they will seek their own independence away from their family environment. They will become more concerned with moral issues.

Intellectual/cognitive

Birth to 4 years, during these first few years a whole list of amazing things will happen. The child will normally triple its weight from its birth weight. He or she will usually progress in the way of movement from rolling over
