CYBER BULLYING – If we only knew, If you only told us
The idea of bullying is truly frightening and the arrival of modernization – new gadgets - makes everything even worse. Cyber bullying, what comes first to your mind? Rude nasty names like ‘you fat ugly pig’ and mean comments like ‘you are worthless’. Let me tell you: cyber bullying is more than just putting a harsh comment on ‘ugly’ photos or videos or simply uploading something that is against other people. Unfortunately, some individuals perform cyber bullying just to satisfy their thirst for attention. However, what they fail to recognise is that it can detrimentally affect someone’s life and indeed, it is becoming a serious problem in society. Although technological gadgets have become a great assistance for most people, severe consequences are still to be faced and believe me… they are even more complicated than you think. Victims can experience major depression and feel unsafe by invading their privacy. It can lead to loss of self-esteem, feelings of anxiety and embarrassment. In some cases, victims do consider committing suicide. This has to stop! Everyone should learn how to accept other’s imperfections and value his or her individuality, but most of all, respect should always be given. I would like to thank the ABC board members for hearing the documentary that I will present to prove my standing about cyber bullying – one of the most important youth issues.
I strongly believe that cyber bullying can have a serious effect and impact on individuals and group of people. This kind of behaviour is no longer confined to the school room or playground but throughout adulthood as well. It can be communicated via text, mobile phones, Internet, social networking sites and so on to threaten or harass somebody. Victims are not the problem, the bullies are. Why do people bully other individuals? Firstly, to become popular or making themselves look tough and in charge. Some people bully to make other people afraid of them or others might be jealous of the person they are bullying. Bullies don't understand how damaging their behaviour is. Most of us would not be able to stand the idea of life without technology. Who would be? It makes our daily activities much easier, faster and convenient. But sadly, technologies also provide the perfect means for cyber bullies and make other people’s lives completely miserable. They often use Facebook to spread their unrespectable messages or comments. This documentary reveals this position by exploring the different trials that Nathaniel, my interview subject experienced and strongly faced since he started to be bullied. It also shows this cyber bulling changes Nathaniel’s peaceful life into a misery. Ultimately, I want to position the audience to accept that everyone has the right to be respected, safe and free from any violence, harassment and bullying. But above everything, I surely want to show how degraded our society’s morals have been.
To increase alertness, face to face interview with the experts will be used to give information to everyone. They will be asked lots of questions concerning to the aspect of the issue and their personal understanding about it. Also an interview with Nathaniel’s parents is one of the techniques that will be used to express the feeling on how he suffered from bullying. This interview will be used to show how hard it was to see their son bullied in person or via technology, without knowing it. With this interview, the audience will have the chance to see the impact of being bullied and what the effect is on an individuals’ life. The intended climax of this documentary is that the opinions of both sides are not the same. The different stages that Nathaniel faced will be shown by using effective photographs when he got bullied. This will reveal how Nathaniel was very depressed and how this affects his school performance and lessen his confidence.
