All cultures are known for changing over time. Many tend to change because of the historical evolution of the people in its society, while others are obligated into changing by outside forces. In Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, the culture of the people from Umuofia was forced into changing by the British. Two distinct views towards this change are discussed in the book. My culture is similar to this culture in a sense because it also changed over time. I would consider a few of these changes to be good and others bad.
The tribe of Umuofia from Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart was encountering a tremendous change after the main character and tribal leader of Umuofia, Okonkwo had been sent away in exile to his mother’s homeland of Mbanta. Okonkwo was sent to Mbanta because he accidentally killed the son of one of the clansman. While Okonkwo was in exile, he had received word that the British had taken over a village called Abame, and they were on the verge of taking over Umuofia as well. He was told that a number of Christian missionaries had arrived in Umuofia and were attempting to convert the villagers into becoming Christian as well. They were trying to convince the villagers that there is only one God, and it is a sin to worship numerous gods or statue –like figures.
