According to Stephen Robbins, (2005) Complexity is the degree of heterogeneity and concentration among environmental elements. Robbins (2005) also states that culture is the shared meaning of attitudes and behavior that are a characteristic of a particular social group that are held by different members of the organization. Complexity of culture theory is a degree in which individuals classify problems based on how difficult they are to solve. Complexity of culture is link with the study of the intrinsic complexity of computational tasks.
This means that looking at a study a task is used to determine the computational resources that is required to solve the task, rather than at a specific scheme (Goldreich, 2007).
It is complexity and the dynamic of culture that has made issues so diverse within the organizational culture. Although, culture is not determined by one’s desire to succeed, it is seen as a conflicting meaning in order to develop an unambiguous definition of culture. On the contrary, Goldreich (2007) states that the main purpose of complexity of culture is to follow a diverse and complex use, which will allow culture to become a practice on one’s daily life. Therefore, using complexity of culture to express and figure out cultural identities will help one understand the importance of a culture system. The issue of complexity of culture stems from people not understanding how important culture is in the organization. According to Robbins (2007), culture’s role within an organization is to create distinctions between one organization and others. Next, it is to convey a sense of identity for all organization employees. Furthermore, it facilitates the generation of commitment one’s self-interest. It also holds a stand for what employees should say and do. Finally, culture serves as a mechanism that guides and shapes employees attitudes and behaviors (Robbins, 2007, p 489).
Organizational culture is the personality and mainframe of the organization, which also refers to a system of shared meanings that are held by members that distinguishes the organization from other organization (Robbins, 2007, p 485).
