Crime Data Comparison Paper

The two metropolitan areas I choose are Abilene, TX and Akron, OH. The crime rate I’m going to be comparing is burglaries between the two cities. Abilene, TX and Akron, OH are 1344.18 miles apart. Both cities have different populations. Abilene, TX is roughly 110 square miles spread out with roughly a hundred fifty thousand or more. Akron is roughly 62.37 square miles closed in with roughly seven hundred thousand people living there.

As of 2005 Abilene, had the population 161.123. Abilene, TX had the total area actual reporting burglary rate of 1,769. As of 2008 Abilene, TX had the population of 159.257. Abilene, TX had the total area actual reporting burglary rate of 1,417. As of 2012 Abilene, TX had the population of 168,908. Abilene, TX had the total area actual reporting burglary rate of 3,631. These statistic include Callahan, Jones, and Taylor Counties.

Akron, OH had more reported burglaries then Abilene, TX. With the three years that I have compared between each city estimating Akron, OH had over two thousand more total area reported burglaries the Abilene, TX. In the three years that I have compared for Abilene, TX the burglary rate stay around the same rate estimated averaging of fifteen hundred burglaries till the year of 2012. In year 2012 the burglary rate spiked to over three thousand burglaries. In the three I have compared for Akron, OH the burglary rate stayed over the five thousand mark. One reason that Akron, OH might have a higher burglary rate is due to the fact that Akron has a larger population. Akron, OH is 62 square miles with roughly seven hundred thousand people living there. The more people the more cars, houses and businesses a criminal has the chance to break into. As Abilene, TX is a larger area having a hundred and ten square miles and less of a population. Another reason the burglaries might be so high in certain area are the poverty rate and unemployment rates. The more people out of a job or needing extra cash might just break in to houses or businesses to make ends meet. Larger populated cities have more light allowing criminals to see better at night. You would figure having wider spaces between houses and less population would give the criminal more time to move around and not be seen. Akron, OH is made up two counties with a large population. In large populates cities the chance that you be recognized by someone is slim to none. That how most criminals get away with burglary because they can’t be identified.
