Creating an American Culture Slavery was a major industry in America for hundreds of years. Buying and selling slaves became a normal process in America. However, in the mid 1800’s, Frederick Douglass, an escaped slave turned abolitionist movement leader; William Lloyd Garrison, an editor of an abolitionist newspaper; and Harriet Beecher Stowe, an author and abolitionist, helped get rid of slavery in America. Many people in America were now starting to see how terrible the slave trade was. No human being, no matter their skin color, should have to be made a slave to another human against their will. Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in Maryland. However, on September 3, 1838 Douglass successfully escaped to New York and began his life as a free black man. He joined the abolition movement a short time later after speaking at a Bristol Anti-Slavery Society meeting. After telling his story to the audience, he was encouraged to become an anti-slavery lecturer. He took part in the American Anti-Slavery Society that traveled around the country and gave speeches about his life in slavery and how rough and terrible it can be. Douglass also wrote articles speaking out against slavery and making the white men picture how slavery could be for them. He also wrote 3 autobiographies, one of which became a best seller and was even published in Europe. This autobiography completely told his story as an American slave. Throughout his work in the abolition movement, his biggest inspiration was William Lloyd Garrison and stated that, “no face and form ever impressed me with such sentiments of the hatred of slavery as did those of William Lloyd Garrison.” William Lloyd Garrison was a free white man, but he was one of the enlightened people who truly comprehended how terrible slavery was. For a brief time he supported the American Colonization society, which wanted to relocate slaves back to the west coast of Africa. However, later he realized it was not good to just get rid of blacks in America and began the Liberator, a newspaper that spoke out loudly against slavery and how it needed to be done away with immediately. It is believed some rebellions and battles over slavery were because of his strong words in his paper. Some people even wanted him arrested because their slaves were acting out because of this newspaper. Garrison didn’t stop with the newspaper though, he continued on to make an organization called the American Anti-Slavery Society.
