How Elements Combine: Ionic Compounds
1. Metals combine with non-metals in many compounds

2. Write the name of the metal first and the non-metal second

3. Change the ending of the non-metal (the second element) to "IDE" 4. Each atom has a specific number of bonds it can form 5. Atoms will combine and either give or receive electrons to make their outer shells stable or "happy" forming ions

6. These ions attract one another forming stable compounds (a positive and negative ion attract) Example: Sodium Chloride
Sodium and Chlorine come together and want to "DATE"... they are attracted to one another.

Chemical Formulas
October 7, 2014

1. Determine element symbols (metal, non-metal)

2. Determine ionic charge for each element

3. Criss cross charges to determine the number of each atom

4. Write down formula

5. Reduce

Definitions

Molecule: two or more atoms of the same or different elements that are chemically joined together in a unit

Chemical Formula: notation that indicates the type and number of atoms in a pure substance

Molecular Compound: a molecule that consist of two or more different elements

Ion: a particle that has either a negative charge or a positive charge

Cation: a positively charged ion

Anion: a negatively charged ion

Ionic Compound: a compound that consists of positively and negatively charged ions

I would like to know how long this document is going to have to be because I have already combined three separate notes together and it still says that the document is not long enough. I am
