Preface
This essay will be comparing and contrasting India and Russia on their history, culture, economics, and politics. Russia and India are two of the biggest countries and have two of the biggest economies in the world but they have vastly different economic and political structures and this difference has led to their very different roles and futures in the world. Russia is located in Eastern Europe and North Asia and is adjacent to fourteen countries and three oceans. Though it is the biggest country in the world, it has a population of only 140 million people. It also owns abundant natural resources like minerals and oil, making it one of the biggest oil and natural gas exporters. It was also the second country in the world to have nuclear weapons, and therefore owns a powerful military. Currently, Russia’s GDP ranks the 8th in the world, but it is going through economic problem. Russia is still not as powerful as it once was and it still faces the problem
It mainly served as provider of raw materials and as a consumer of British manufactured goods. In spite of exploiting India, Britain brought the English language, democratic government, and the construction of railroads that benefited India afterwards. After gaining independence after the Second World War, India inherited the democratic government the British had left it with and sought to build a secular and independent political legislature. However, until recently, India’s prime ministers were all from the same party, which for a long time brought the government with little change of the central-planned economy and a corruption problem. India has many issues, such as unequal distribution of income and long-survived hostility towards Pakistan, each of which I will explain further in this essay. Currently, with the new Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s economy is becoming market-oriented, which Modi hopes will bring India new incentives and
