City of Glass
Drip drop drip drop. That’s all I could hear after the flood. The water from the seas had covered almost all of earths land. There were few people left but even fewer places to live. The dry land that was still usable was needed mostly for resources and a few homes. My name is Cornelius Vanyetti. Twelve years ago I was a father a husband and an unemployed inventor. I was just another human among seven billion others trying to make things work. The day the flood came I was just sitting quietly fiddling with an invention. When it happened I saw streets flooded, cars floating down roads, water poured into houses filling them up like I would fill a cup with water, people everywhere trying to make it to higher ground. There was no way this was just a flood it had been 30*C every day for a month, no rain, the grass was brown and crispy the earth was dust and had cracks all over it, we were in the middle of the longest drought in history. This was a flood from rising sea levels. After a few weeks everything went back to normal, a few weeks after that we got rain, but a switch had flipped in my mind “what if this happens again....even worse?” That’s when I started working on my invention to save the world that would be needed today in 2025!
I pull the curtain. At that moment I know I’ve changed humanity forever. The crowd is in awe of the videos pictures and models on display of my creation The City of Glass. I continue to explain details of my invention “Huge crystal clear glass domes the size of cities will be submerged at the bottom of the ocean. Surrounded by water on the outside but perfectly dry on the inside, maintaining a balanced eco-system, sustainable for all living matter. In the domes there are controlled water systems meaning man-made lakes, streams and rivers to help the environment.” Many people are filled with curiosity. A short plump elderly lady asks, “How many cities of glass will there be? Will all of us be able to live there Mr.Vanyetti?” My reply to this is quite simple “Why over one hundred!” I say “I’m so glad you ask, my team and I have created one hundred and two to be precise and are working on more everyday. Everyone in the world and many more will be able to live in this new underwater world of glass.” Then a young man tall with dark hair, pale skin and scrawny looking asks, “How will we get to these cities sir?” This is when I call upon my colleague Gregory White-Horse. “My colleague Mr. White-Horse will give you all the details concerning transportation, food, water and shelter. He will listen to any of your concerns and answer your questions. Mr. White-Horse is the head of security and controls what goes in and out of the cities.” Gregory’s reply to the scrawny mans question is “the transportation to and from cities is really quite simple, I have designed water taxis that are indestructible and can carry large numbers of people. The taxis will be able to take you to other cities and to the dry worlds we will call home now. There are lots of these taxis so no worries about not having a lift!” Another man dressed head to toe in bright yellow asks “how will we get fresh food and water?” Gregory replies with a tone like he had practiced what he was going to say over and over again “well, there are divers who will deliver any needed supplies or resources every three days. If you need something the divers will get it for you and bring it to the local mail delivery located in the downtown area of each glass city. They also can deliver produce
There is no clear definition of what postmodernism is. However, City of Glass is considered to be the by far the text which is most visibly postmodernism. This is precisely because it “offers the kind of narrative that zigzags visibly, deliberately missing at all angle the sense of a foundation.” The postmodernist discourse remains central to the understanding of City of Glass. Perhaps the only thing that makes the story alluring is the fact that it is steeped in postmodernist features. Otherwise…
urban midsized city approximately 30 miles south of the city of Seattle. Seattle tends to be the main attraction to the state of Washington to newcomers and visitors mainly due to its booming economic growth and beautiful green natural surroundings as well as landscape of mountains and water views surrounding the city. Its multi-ethnic demographics, many cultural activities, and liberal politics encourage ethnic diversity thereby attracting a lot of minorities to migrate to the city as well. However…
may appear to be a city of the past, filled with antiquated industries and timeworn traditions. However, after further examination, I have learned that Pittsburgh is a city of the present. Pittsburgh has been able to remain a modern city due to the resilience of its inhabitants. Despite large shifts in the economy, the people of Pittsburgh have constantly adapted to change and have ultimately kept Pittsburgh a city of the present. Pittsburgh, “a great but often overlooked city”, is filled with unique…
discredit Khomeini in January of 1978. A group of theology students noticed this article and protested in the city of Qom. They were brutality put down by the army and many were killed. Forty days after the death of the students, leading members of the clergy who opposed the Shah called for Iranians to protest and then to attend there Mosques. The protests were peaceful, except in the city of Tabriz where the government sent in tanks to control the demonstrations, and killed more than one hundred…
Johnson quoted “Maybe, just maybe, we shall at last come to care for the most important but most challenging and surely the most satisfying of all architectural creations; building cities for people to live in”. This explains a lot about Mr. Johnson because he felt satisfaction when building things and places in the city for the people. That was his addiction in life is creating something for others and knowing that you made others happy was satisfying. However, the life of Mr. Johnson occurred on…

At this time Europe was segregated into many different city states and kingdoms, and each were competing with each other not only in trade but also in architecture. Architecture became very important, the more eloquent and lavish the buildings were, the wealthier that state was thought to be. At a time when there is a lot of different city states, the wealthiest one would attract the most people thus making it more powerful then other city states and kingdoms. Throughout France, Germany, and the…

screamed and yelled and threw a goblet of water towards the “Ay” (or high official). Of course, the glass shattered and spilled water over the floor, which was promptly mopped up. That was then, and this is now. As you read this, you may be sipping a glass of your favorite beverage. Is there any possibility that any molecules of water, from the royal fling, can show up in the beverage in your glass? Surprising, but true, not just a few, but a lot of the royalty-tainted molecules, live close…
