Information Systems support to the Business Process

The amount of data produced by businesses today can often be overwhelming. The difficulty to process data manually has resulted in need for effective information systems. Almost all organizations are using electronic data to produce quick results and timely information. The decision-making process is based on the information received from stored data. With an efficient electronic data processing system, information can be sent and used by many people in less time than the time needed to process this data manually (Blurtit, 2011). In order for a business to operate efficiently, companies must establish processes to aid in the achievement of a higher goal. A business process can be defined as a set of interrelated tasks linked to an activity that spans functional boundaries (Virdell, 2003). A good information system allows an organization to interact with its customers as well as outside sources, which are needed for task success. According to "Bukisa" (2011), "A good information system can facilitate direct communication between firm and suppliers, manufacturers, dealers, and marketers. Together, they can create a value chain as though they were in one organization” (para. 4). R3 Strategic Support Group currently uses a process that gives our client the ability to manage the use of equipment for deploying forces more effectively. Before we assumed this role, the client was managing the program through repeated manual input of information at different stages, and the information was not stored a way for members of the organization to use the data to conduct day-to-day operations. Using an automated process, users input data that is stored in a central location. This approach has eliminated repeated input of data and has made the combined data accessible to users across the organization. The process has given key personnel the ability to track aspects of the program, from the initial ordering of equipment, issue of equipment sets, training conducted at the issue site, and the ability to monitor failure rates of the equipment. The system does have its weaknesses because of the inability for personnel located in forward deployed areas not always able to have access to the computer systems needed to input and retrieve the data. We are currently exploring the use of electronic tablets
