Understanding what diabetes is, the different types, and its impact on America today.

Diabetes mellitus also known as diabetes is a disease that is caused by a deficiency of the pancreatic hormone insulin, which results in a failure to metabolize carbohydrates, fats and protein. It is also defined as too much sugar in the blood or high blood glucose. There are different types of diabetes which can be identified as producing too much blood glucose or not enough insulin. Prediabetes is the stage where blood glucose is high but not high enough to be diagnosed as Type 2. Type 2 diabetes affects the way the body process blood glucose. Gestational diabetes is a form of high blood glucose that can affect pregnant women. Then there is Type 1 diabetes that affects the way the pancreas produces the insulin. According to Fain (2009) diabetes affects 24 million Americans and 8 million still have not been diagnosed.

The symptoms of diabetes, possible risk factors and the organs it can affect.

According to American Diabetes Association the symptoms include urinating often, feeling hungry although you have eaten, extreme fatigue, feeling thirsty, blurry vision, cuts and bruises that heal slowly, and weight loss or weight gain.
