April 29, 2013 If I were the director for “The Cherry Orchard,” I would be very specific on Anya’s character. She is the daughter Ranevksy. Anya is seventeen years old and she seems to receive much attention from the other characters. Dunyasha, Varya and Trofimov, other characters from the play, have special names for her such as “darling”, “pretty one”, and “My sun My spring!” or “My darling”. Something about Anya is very special in which makes her personality stand out from others. Anya’s connection in the beginning towards the cherry orchard is very close and personal. Varya, who is the adopted sister, and Anya don’t share much of the same fate for the orchard. Trofimov is a student attending a local university. He notices Anya at the end of Act 1. Something about her caught his attention but he can’t exactly realize what it is. Within the end of Act 2, the love of Anya towards the orchard changed her. She begins to question, “What have you done to me Peter? I don’t love the cherry orchard as I used to.” Vayra announces that if by August the debts for the orchard were not covered, the property would have to be auctioned in order to pay for what her family could not afford. The big effect in which caused the cherry orchard to go down was the death of Ranevsky’s husband and her son. Once the property has been sold Anya shows her compassion towards her mother’s pain in losing a very meaningful property. Anya is very young and full of ambitions. Although she also hurts with the fact that the cherry orchard was sold she saw it as “ a new life beginning,” as she expressed to her mother. To play a role of Anya you must be very capable of being in touch with your feelings and having companionship towards something important to others. You are confused at points on how you feel for something
