In the story, To Kill A Mockingbird, Calpurnia is best represented by a shield because like a shield, she is able to protect the children and at the same time equips them with knowledge. First, Calpurnia is compassionate. Scout reveals that “[Calpurnia] was all angles and bones… her hand was wide as a bed slat and twice as hard” (Lee 6). The quotation demonstrates that the children consider Calpurnia as a motherly figure of the Finch family, as she is protecting Scout and Jem by being hard on them in the beginning. Second, Calpurnia is wise. When Scout judges Walter Cunningham’s table manners, Calpurnia requests her to the kitchen and states: “Don’t matter who they are, anybody sets food in this house’s yo’ comp’ny, and don’t you let me catch you remarkin’ on their ways like you was so high and mighty” (Lee 33). The quotation indicates how Calpurnia guides the children, she teaches Scout that everyone deserves to be treated with respect and it is wrong to judge others based on their class. In conclusion, Calpurnia is symbolized by shield because she looks after the children and instills both value and knowledge in them.
