Character Analysis: The Great Gatsby

Stage begins with spotlight on an adolescent boy and girl sitting together on a bench wearing different school uniforms. A projection of a bus stop behind them. On a separate screen to the left an image of bare ground. The two pull books from their bags and look at each other’s books. They notice they are the same.

PETER: The Great Gatsby, good choice

NATALIE: (smiles bashfully) I guess you must have good taste in books, I don’t know many guys that would take on this one. (She flips the book to look at the cover)

PETER: I guess I’m not most guys, I like your hair.

NATALIE: I haven’t washed it in three days

PETER: I like that you let the world see how your hair is, opposed to... (his eyes trail with a girl walking by, Natalie’s eyes

PETER: As opposed to that girl and so many others, Straightened, blow dried, dyed. So much effort put into what the top of our heads looks like.

NATALIE: Maybe it’s a special occasion.

PETER: (faces Natalie with a smirk) Giving the benefit of the doubt as well, I admire you but she was wearing the Logan Catholic College uniform.

NATALIE: (looks at his school emblem on his shirt) Riverside academy, by the jawline and crew cut I’m guessing you’re on a scholarship for football?

PETER: Completing my senior year on a scholarship for literature.

A bus approaches and Peter rises tears a slip of paper out of his book pulls a pen from his pocket and writes on the paper and hands it to Natalie.

PETER: (looks Natalie in the eye while walking backwards to the bus) To be continued.

A screen to the right shows a torn slip of paper with digits on it and some writing ‘call me please x – Peter’

The stage lights go out (The screen to the left presents a small sprout rising out of the ground)

Stage stays dark for 5 seconds

(the stage lights up with Peter and Natalie sitting in two chairs facing the audience and a projection of a horror movie in the background)

NATALIE: Hissing with playful annoyance- Out of every movie playing, this one

NATALIE: Exactly! If you want me in your future work hard to prove that you love me!

PETER: Natalie! I will not be with someone who is selfish enough to rather go to the movies every week instead of having a successful life.

NATALIE: Fine!
The beeping noise signals the end of the call

The stage lights go out. The screen at the left displays a rose turning darker and petals falling from it until there is no petals left.

The stage lights up. Natalie sitting at a desk with a laptop going through her photos. Her laptop screen is displayed on the screen to the right. Pictures of parties, family and friends. She swipes left and a photo of PETER embracing NATALIE appears both smiling.
The projection changes to a close up of Natalie’s face.

Her eyes start watering and the corners of her mouth twitch into a frown.

A flashback begins, a montage of memories of PETER and NATALIE’S first encounter, their dates at cafes, movies and dinners. Them sitting on the couch. Clippings of them laughing together, the night PETER asked NATALIE to be his girlfriend.
