Emma Contreras Mrs. Sahagun Algebra II P.2 04 May 2012 Expected Cancer Cases Cancer is the leading cause of death in economically developed countries and the second leading cause of death in developing countries. Cancer is defined as the unwanted growth of cells in any part of the body. One of the biggest causes that can result in the development of various types of cancer is smoking. Cancer causes about 550,000 deaths a year. Many believe that cancer is all the same, but that is not true. There are about one hundred different types of cancer that grow in humans. Some of the most common cases are skin cancer, breast cancer, and cervical cancer. Between the years of 2002 and 2010, new cancer rates continued to increase. The numbers of people diagnosed with cancer will not decrease until we find a cure for this monstrous disease. Until there is a way to stop cancer, people and families will continue to be affected. Because cancer rates were expected to increase at approximately 2.75 percent a year, the model that best represents this devastating increase is y=0.0275x+1.26. In 2002 scientists estimated about 1,284,900 new cancer cases in the United States alone (NCBI). Within one year they anticipated an additional 1,334,100 new cases (NCBI). If you substitute these numbers into the model, you will see that the calculations are correct and efficient. The equation y=0.0275x+1.26 best represents the data of expected cancer rates between the years of 2002 and 2010 because it can predict the number of cases in any year. If doctors never find a cure for cancer many predictions can be made for the future. In order to make predictions for the future you need to know all of the statistics and with those predictions you can also encounter various consequences. Let’s say that someone wanted to predict how many new cancer cases would come in the year 2024. All you would have to do is substitute 23 for x into the equation, y=0.0275x+1.26. The expected amount of cases in 2024 is 1,892,500. If you were to predict cases in 2045 the total number would be approximately 2,470,000. These calculations also can lead to consequences. If you predict the wrong number of cases it increases the chance of stress and worry for doctors and people. Current data trends and predictions can also affect the events that occur in the future. Cancer incidence rates have been reported to be increasing in the United States, although trends vary according to form of cancer (NCI). Current activity to prevent cancer has an effect on predictions because of a cure. If doctors were to create a cure for cancer, the predictions and new cases would decrease drastically. There would also be less deaths. Chemotherapy is another example
