1. Summarise the main development of a child from the age range 0-2 years, 3-5 years, and 5-8 years.
All children will grow and develop in various ways and at various times. Children’s development cannot be judged by text books as all children are individuals and come from various cultural backgrounds. However all children will follow a certain path of development, for example some children will be walking by their 1st birthday while others will be nearer their 2nd birthday before they attempt to take their first steps,. There are 5 aspects of development that all children will go through within the first 8 years of their lives, these are: physical, language, intellectual, emotional, and social.
Physical development:
Physical contact starts almost as soon as a baby is born, some babies may try to lift their heads quickly and start kicking vigorously. They become a toddler once they start taking their first steps and throwing or kicking a ball around. They start to play simple games and hop and skip soon after this as their balance improves, as their balance improves more over the years they start riding bikes without stabilisers and also start taking part as a team.
Language development:
From birth to 2 years old a babies communication skills improve greatly as they start with crying, cooing or gurgling to communicate, to a speaking vocabulary of around 50 words and an understanding of many more, from 3 years old they start to speak in sentences, using past and present tenses and also plurals. They become a lot more inquisitive and ask constant questions at 4 years old. Then they start to describe things a lot more accurately and recognise similarities and opposites between 5 years old and 8 years old.
Intellectual development:
Babies will listen for familiar voices and try to make eye contact from birth; they start to need more complex toys to keep them amused soon after. Babies memorise start to develop at around 9-12 months old, they will start to enjoy “pretend” play and may even talk to themselves at 2 years old. Fine motor skills improve enabling the child to use a paintbrush or pencil more easily at 3 years old, 4 years olds can understand the concept of the past and the future. From then on children’s intellectual development is improved massively due to the fact most children have started school around 5 years old. They may start to read independently around 6 years old, and become a lot more aware of the world between then and their 8th birthday.
Emotional development:
From birth to 2 years old a baby will feel the bond between their main carer and themselves, and may develop fears such as a fear of the dark or dogs. Between 3 years old and 5 years old they will be able to discuss their own feelings and understand other people’s feelings. From 5 years old they learn to control their own feelings and start to put too much emphasis on succeeding.
Social development:
Babies are very social they enjoy having cuddles and feeding, a distressed baby can be soothed by the smell, touch or even the sound of their main carer. By 2 years old they enjoy carrying out simple tasks like feeding themselves and learning to get dressed. Children start to learn about taking turns around 3 years old but may still have tantrums if they don’t get their own way. At 5 years old most children are in school so they start to understand right from wrong and may also become aware of differences like gender, background and culture. Some children become less social around 6 years old while others surround themselves with friends, they will find their own place within their social circle around 8 years old.
