Part 1: Living in a diverse world

1. What is meant by diversity? Diversity literally means difference. Diversity recognises that though people have things in common with each other, they are also different and unique in many ways. Diversity is about recognising and valuing those differences. Diversity therefore consists of visible and non-visible factors, which include personal characteristics such as background, culture, personality and work-style in addition to the characteristics that are protected under discrimination legislation in terms of race, disability, gender, religion and belief, sexual orientation and age by recognising and understanding our individual differences and embracing them, and moving beyond simple tolerance, we can create a productive environment in which everybody feels valued.
2. Describe the community you live in. Highlight some of the variations you may observe in terms of:
Interests
Beliefs
Ages
Lifestyles
Personal, social and cultural identities.

I live in the heart of Leicester just opposite famous Abbey Park. My area is mostly occupied by families. Ethnicity in my area: 60% approx native white population including English, Polish, Latvian, Hungary etc. and 40% others, including a large number of Asians originally from East Africa, Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis etc. Teachers in primary schools are dealing with about 30 different Mother Tongue languages. We have churches, synagogues, a mosque and Hindu temple. There is also a lot to do for kids as in local Park we have kinds playground, pet corner beautiful river with boats to hire and fun fair is visiting 3 times a year. We have a local shopping centre and different restaurants for everyone’s taste. Local council provided us with library and college is just down the road. People may develop as individuals with their own beliefs and behaviors , which makes the community more unique. All age groups are present in my community and everyone get along very well.

3. Explain how the variations in question 2 contribute to the diversity of the community. You have to be open to diversity to get the benefits. It's all about people with different ideas, thoughts, behaviour , religion etc. You get new perspectives and new ideas. You get culture.
Diversity in society helps us to grow as individuals and open our minds to different ways of life. When you become exposed to different ways to live, and see how other cultures carry on then you are no longer closed to the idea that we are all different in some way, and those differences can be meaningful in our lives. When it comes to diversity it also promotes more tolerance. In terms of being tolerant that means diversity can help us accept other cultures, and even adapt some of their ways into our society. The point is, we are all different. Yet the differences that we have between us can be used to strengthen society as we know it. Diversity allows us the opportunity to learn, grow, understand new ways of living, and experience life to the fullest. Without diversity, we are closed off in our own worlds. But with it, we expand our knowledge and we are no longer ignorant. When you are aware of the differences and
