What do we know about artificial sweeteners? They are synthetic sugar substitutes, but some come from natural substances and can be thousands of times sweeter than normal sugar. We know it is good for diabetics because it doesn’t raise blood sugar and will also help in diets because there are no calories and no carbohydrates. However, because of experiments done in 1970, it was found that some artificial sweeteners are linked to cancer. It showed that cyclamate in combination with saccharin caused bladder cancer in laboratory animals. Even though some substitute sugars were proven not related to cancer, some are still up in the air regarding being the cause of tumors and bladder issues. There are many scenarios where eating artificial sweeteners can be a hazard. To a pregnant woman with the disease PKU, eating these sugars can cause birth defects to the child. The synthetic sugars include aspartiame, which cannot be broken down by these women. Also, all women that are pregnant should steer clear from saccharin, a sweetener because it has been indirectly linked to the child having some sort of cancer, like bladder cancer. A lot of different artificial sweeteners are, for the most part, low calorie and sugar free. These sound great for a person on a diet, however they might be the worst part of one. Artificial sweeteners have been linked to a larger appetite and some to even raise blood sugar, which is obviously the opposite of losing weight and maintaining a healthy body.
