In this week’s article, “Evolution as a General Theoretical Framework for Economics and Public Policy” by David Sloan Wilson and John M Gowdy, I read and learn about the definition and criteria of evolution in nature and how this evolution connects to the economic studies and public policies. Another objective of the article is to reveal the reasons why evolution might not be useful for the study of human behavior and culture. The article list reasons that evolution study might not contribute to the study of human behavior and culture; these reasons question the viability of using evolution to explain real world events. One of the most interesting reason for me was about the approaching an idea from different assumption and perspectives and be able to end up the same conclusion and that it would only support existing discoveries and not be a new idea, so in the end it does not add any values to the study. I find this interesting because that would put evolutionary studies as an inferior study and have no innovation to speak of, it would always be proving ideas and not be inventing ideas. The authors of this article explain that the evolutionary studies can apply to vast numbers of topics and is very important in the study of economics and public policies. To explain the idea of evolution, the article cites the four questions that Nobel Prize winner Niko Tinbergen listed to address all evolutionary products. The first one asks about the function of the trait and what is special about this specific trait. The second question asks about the phylogeny in evolution or the evolutionary history of the specific trait.
