15 September 2014 Identity Crisis Some people don’t understand how to fit in without concealing who they really are. They mask their imperfections to fit in. As well as , in “The Great Gatsby,” by F. Scott
Fitzgerald characters used masks to become recognized. A mask is “a covering for all or part of the face, worn in a disguise , or to amuse or terrify other people;” however were not exactly talking about a mask visibly and physically on you. These masks don’t just appear when you see somebody it takes a while to figure out if a person is faking in which Fitzgerald’s characters case it wasn’t hard.
Myrtle Wilson a woman “in the middle thirties, and faintly stout, but she carried her surplus flesh sensuously as some women can;” (Fitzgerald 29) Myrtle has a high self esteem as though she was the prettiest of them all, which is not the case at all. George Wilson is the husband of Myrtle, and though she is unhappy she parades the mask of happiness because she’s already in too deep. 15 September 2014 broke, she stays but isn’t loyal. She portrays as a gold digger and i say that because finding out her husband doesn't have money she cheats on him with Tom Buchanan. Instead of telling
George how she truly felt she masked the situation as if it never happened and i feel remorse for George because he thinks that she loves him and she doesn’t. Her content behind this was for money not love; Tom bought her all the expensive things she wanted and thats all she cared about. Myrtle was one who didn't like the social class she was born in so she tried to mock others of theirs as though she wasn’t one.
Next, we have Daisy Buchanan, who is married to Tom
Buchanan but in love with Jay Gatsby. Gatsby had went to fight in World War 1, but before he left Daisy promises to stay and wait for his return. Instead of having patience she took a different route and married Tom. Daisy was money hungry just like Myrtle, but in Daisy case she was married into money so she was driven by money. Before and during their marriage Tom was cheating on her and I feel if she wasn’t so motivated by money she would have realized that. She breaks her promise to Gatsby, but all her feelings weren’t gone. I feel she broke her promise to Gatsby because she was displeased with the way he made his money, which was in illegal gambling. As for, Tom he was born

15 September 2014 into old money. So the mask that Daisy wears is the fact that she rather have money than to be loved and instead of earning it she marries the one who has it all. The opinion of others was important to Daisy, she thought that if she had money people would think highly of her. As Daisy and Nick Carraway are talking; she says to him “you didn't come to my wedding” Nick replies with “ I wasn't back from the war.” At this point, Daisy explains, “That’s true.” “ Well, I've had a very bad time,”
Nick, and I’m pretty critical about everything”(Fitzgerald 21).
When Daisy reveals this she is concealing another mask which is how she truly feels. No one understands where Daisy comes from because she bottles everything in.
