My Health Promotion Campaign on Smoking took place on Thursday November 6th 2014 with year 8 pupils at Bay House School and Sixth Form. This campaign was carried out and produced with the help of another student in my Health and Social Class, Ellie Hopkins. Our campaign ran over a lesson, so it took place for an hour in a classroom of around 30 pupils aged 12-13, under the supervision of the Citizenship teacher, Mrs Cornish; who also runs the schools StopSmoking group. In order to carry out this lesson, we had to carefully choose a topic which would be appropriate for the age group we had picked and come up with a range of activities and a PowerPoint to last the full hour, and also, more importantly, to educate the pupils. As well as creating a PowerPoint and activities, I had also contacted the NHS Stoptober team to order some Quit Kits and leaflets for the pupils to take home with them. We were provided with aids such as ‘the tar jar’ which shows the pupils how smoking affects the lungs by the subjection to tar build up.
We chose smoking as the topic for our campaign as it is something that most people can relate to as they may already know someone that smokes or they may be a smoker themselves. We believed smoking would be a good topic to choose as it can relate to both males and females and can be targeted at a range of audiences and also, we would learn a lot from doing the campaign ourselves. To start of our campaign, we had to decide what year group we wished to target and make sure that the content of our campaign was suitable for that age group. This is because some material used could either be too complex or too simple and possibly too graphic for the pupils, depending on the age group.

Above is the lesson plan created for the campaign we produced to the class, in order for the lesson to run as smoothly as it possibly could. It shows how the lesson should run and it also gives details such as how long each different activity and slide should last, so that the lesson lasts the full hour and everything can be included without needing to be rushed. The lesson plan is also for reassurance as we would have been nervous throughout the campaign and it was also so the teacher could help us to create the best lesson possible by providing us with aids in order to teach the pupils.
