After reading the presented passage of "The Great Gatsby", it is very obvious to me in which the different ways that Fitzgerald used imagery, syntax, along with juxtaposition to enhance his purpose. "Over the great bridge, with the sunlight through the girders making a constant flicker upon the moving cars, with the city rising up across the river in white heaps and sugar lumps all built with a wish out of non-olfactory money." (73). Here, Fitzgerald has provided an amazing source of imagery. I can truly imagine the sunlight flickering among the moving cars in my mind. It is much easier to connect with the characters in the story and understand the book to a different degree when I myself can imagine the atmosphere, setting, ext. "The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mystery and the beauty in the world." (73.) Here, Fitzgerald has provided a great example of juxtaposition. Both mystery, and beauty are implied that they are a factor of the world that the characters are apart of. This act helps me to compare and contrast the two elements and help to define the emotional source at that time in the story. "The friends looked out at us with the tragic eyes and short upper lips of south-eastern Europe and I was glad that the sight of Gatsby's splendid car was included in their somber holiday." (73.)
