Anti-Slavery International is a Non Government Organization based in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1839 and it is the world’s oldest international human rights organization. Anti-Slavery International works at local, national and international level to draw attention to the continuing problem of slavery and campaigning for its eradication in the countries that are most affected today.

One might think that slavery has been abolished however it still exists in today’s society. Although this exploitation is often not called slavery, the conditions are the same. People are sold like objects, forced to work for little or no pay and are at the mercy of their employers. Anti-Slavery International is working towards eliminating these forms of slavery from regions such as Eastern Europe, West Africa, South America and South Asia.

Anti-Slavery International is the only charity in the United Kingdom working exclusively against slavery and related abuses, and is the leading organisation in this field. By working with local partners they investigate and report on slavery and promote action to eliminate this abuse. They do this through:

- Public Outreach: Raising awareness and understanding of slavery amongst the general public is an essential part of the organization’s work. The NGO outreaches to a wide audience including university students, community groups, faith groups, schools, museums & libraries, and the public at large, encouraging people to organize awareness raising activities in their communities and get involved with their campaigns.

- Events: Anti-slavery international holds talks, workshops and festivals to raise awareness in our communities of the ongoing slavery and to raise money to abolish it.
- Working with Businesses and in Partnership: Companies contribute to ending slavery by identifying, eradicating and preventing forced labor in their supply chains. Anti-Slavery International’s work with partner organizations takes many forms, such as campaigning together for policies and programs which would help eradicate slavery and undertaking joint research projects.
- Campaigns: Our action puts pressure on governments to take action to stop slavery in their countries. It also offers support to local organisations in their struggle to protect basic human rights. The NGO has campaigns such as the Victim Protection Campaign (Call on UK Government to introduce a comprehensive victim protection system), the Cotton Crimes Campaign (petition to end child forced labour in Uzbekistan), the Home Alone campaign (Act to protect domestic workers in UK and across the world) and the Chocolate campaign (to end child slavery in the chocolate industry).

Anti-Slavery International relies on the support of people like us. There are many ways for me, my civics class and the school as a whole to help abolish modern day slavery from donating online to running a marathon or setting up a local campaigning group. We can;
