Anthem Essay

In the book Anthem, Ayn Rand promotes her ideals of human nature by creating a society in which individualism and wisdom are sins. All men are similar to their fellow brethren and no one is better than the other in any way. The protagonist, Equality 7-2521 struggles in this world as he questions the belief of collectivism that his government enforces on their people. In the Bible, there is also the man named Adam who went against the rules of God and gained wisdom. Equality was born and raised in the ways of his society while Adam was made in the likeness of God himself. Equality displays Ayn Rand's belief of egoism by rediscovering electricity and trying to share it with his society, falling in love with Liberty 3-5000 and teaching her individualism, and standing up to his oppressive government and leaving it for good. Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of Knowledge when they were told not to, got cursed by God, and were banished from the Garden of Eden for having knowledge of good and evil.
In the bible, Adam and Eve were given everything that they needed by God with the one exception of not to eat from the Tree of Knowledge. They were told by the serpent that to eat of it would give them knowledge equal to God’s. In Anthem, Equality and Liberty are told that they have everything that they will ever need or desire by the council. They are forbidden to gain knowledge that is not permitted by the council but only to do as they are told. Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the pursuit of knowledge and ate of the tree in order to gain equality to God. When they did this God found out and punished them for all eternity. God exiled them from the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were forced to suffer and survive on their own after that. In Anthem, Equality and Liberty go against the will of the council and Equality yearns to gain knowledge that he realizes is being hidden from him. He hides his studies at first but then wants to share them with the House of Scholars for the betterment of society but is instead condemned. Equality left the community and fled into the forest. Both Adam and Eve and Equality and Liberty are able to obtain the knowledge that they yearn for after they flee from their guilt of disobedience.
Equality and Adam both went against their rulers and sinned for the sake of knowledge. They were both exiled and went to spread their ideas to others. They both had a lover, Adam with Eve and Equality with Liberty, who followed them out of their community and went along to spread the ideas of knowledge. Adam ate from the tree, knowing the consequences but wanting to gain the knowledge along with Eve. Equality discovered the electricity mainly for himself. He knew it was a sin but he did it for his own glory. He does not regret building the light and pursuing his scientific discoveries. By him disagreeing with the
