Literary Device at work: Metaphor and Diction

Analysis: The man being referred to, as you all know has fallen in love with a nineteen year old waiter. He does not want to be in love though. He acts this way because he knows what love truly means. This seventy five year old man has seen that love is a sickness, and this is why he recalls his “more than enough problems and anxieties.” He knows that love is something that will inconvenience him as a common cold or flu virus would. Additionally, there is a reference to the man’s age in the above excerpt. It is no surprise that people of an older age possess weakened immune systems. The reference to age is quite possibly saying to readers that should this man ‘catch love’ it would be take quite some time before he was fully healed because love is such a severe sickness and because his body is not as agile or ready to defend itself. These two facts, when put together create the metaphor ‘Love is a sickness’
My second literary device in this above line is diction. We see the idea that love is a great inconvenience as it is likened to an ‘escapade’ which the man would have to ‘embark’ on. This further support our thesis that love is a not an emotion, because it is understood that the symptoms and repercussions of love are too great and terrible and therefore, he tries to avoid being
