Inclusive learning is about making sure that every learner in the classroom has their needs identified and met. It is about realising that every learner will have specific individual needs and it is the job of the teacher to accommodate the needs of all of their learners. Booth et al. (2000) state ‘Inclusion is seen to involve the identification and minimising of barriers to learning and participation’ (Booth et al., 2000: 13).

One approach to inclusive learning is having additional support for the learners with additional educational needs (AEN). This can be in the form of a teaching assistant or in some more severe cases a carer.

This suggests that no matter how the assessment is done, it should always be done in a way that encourages the learner to better themselves and to keep going. It should never be negative.

In line with the Wolf report 2006, learners need to continue to develop their functional skills; literacy, language, numeracy and ICT, post secondary education, so all adult courses need to encourage learners to develop in these areas. This can be done by ensuring good session planning though out the course, which provide learners with a variety of different sessions which enable learners to demonstrate and develop their skills and evidence their abilities. According to Banks (2009) ‘Planning is fundamental to sustained effective teaching. Good planning gives you the freedom to be creative and spontaneous while being thorough and systematic’ (Banks, 2009:9).

As part of each session a teacher should build in activities which involve reading, writing, undertaking calculations and using computing equipment.

For example, on an Electrical installer’s course, a learner will need to demonstrate that he can read and understand the customer’s requirements and discuss any changes to the work before starting which would involve literacy and language skills. A teacher should schedule in a session which would involve a role play
