Silent Killer
Conceiving a baby through a planned pregnancy can take many years or it can take one night of meaningless unprotected sex, resulting in an unplanned pregnancy. There are many times when a woman doesn't know she is pregnant until she visits a doctor. Since it is an unplanned pregnancy, it leaves her with a hard unwanted decision to carry on with the pregnancy or to terminate it. Abortion is the removal of an embryo or fetus from the uterus in order to end a pregnancy. If a woman decides to abort her baby, the baby can't do anything about their life being taken away from them. Their whole future is demolished. I believe abortion is wrong when committing it for a selfish reason.
There are two sides to the abortion topic. Those strongly opposed to abortion call themselves "pro-life.” Many of those who support the right to have an abortion call themselves "pro-choice," or those who believe it is a woman's right to choose what she does with her body. These two groups offer different solutions to the problem. The pro-life solution is to have the child and basically live with it. They believe abortion is not an answer. The pro-choice view is that abortion is a way of terminating a pregnancy that the mother feels is appropriate. Should it be legal for victims of rape who have no other alternative? Or should a woman have the right to kill her innocent child as a form of birth control?
People hold sharply different views on whether or not a fetus should be protected. Many believe that life begins at conception, the moment when an egg is fertilized by a sperm. These people, who argue that even this earliest form of life has the same rights as a person, generally oppose abortion at any stage of pregnancy. Others claim that an embryo or fetus is not a person until the time of birth. Such a view, held by some pro-choice advocates, suggests that an embryo or a fetus has no rights to be protected.
Some of the issues concerning abortion are related to the safety of the procedure. Despite the fact that abortion was illegal in the United States before 1973, many women were able to find someone who would help them end their pregnancy. Often performed by untrained individuals in unsanitary conditions, these illegal abortions harmed women physically, increased the risks associated with future pregnancies, and even resulted in death.
Imagine a 16 year old girl had an abortion, because she didn’t think she’d be a good mom and didn’t think she would be able to make it through financially. Now she’s 25 and married. She looks back at her life and there’s nothing she regrets most. Is abortion murder though? According to the Webster Dictionary, abortion is to terminate a pregnancy because the baby is not capable of living. Murder is to kill another human being.
Abortion is a very controversial subject that has been continually argued over for the past few years and probably many years to come. In my eyes abortion is wrong on some standard, but many believe it can be the right thing to do. I understand that there are some circumstances that people consider abortion to be their only way out. In certain cases, the pregnancy is a result of rape. Although I feel great sympathy for these people that have been through a tragedy, still is it the child's fault? We have people that can't conceive that want more than anything to be blessed with a child. So why not before taking the life of your own, give her or him, and opportunity to live a happy, successful life whether it is with or without you.
The parents find it challenging to afford the expenses of an additional family member. It also happens that becoming a mother is too much of a responsibility. Maybe the woman carrying the child is not ready for it. The pregnancy is too complicated for the mother to give birth that it becomes absolutely necessary to go for such options. Giving life to an unhealthy baby and watching it suffer all day and night can be highly jeopardizing
Abortion is an issue that our country is very divided on, there are many arguments for and against abortion, which is considered to be the deliberate termination of one's pregnancy. This isn't simply an issue of what is right or wrong, abortion is one of the most intricate and sensitive topics our nation struggles with. Because of this sensitivity, our judicial system got involved, with the landmark abortion case, Roe v Wade (1973), which granted abortion as a fundamental right, but allowed the states…
The majority of arguments about abortion do come down to the moral status of a fetus, but not all. The typical arguments associated to abortion reflect the ongoing struggle to define the issue based on the rights of a fetus. This paper however, will look at extreme arguments, pros and cons, which are not based on morality of the fetus and will define these arguments as they relate to ethical theories. These non-typical arguments include: pregnant women’s health, legalism, religious objections…
One of the most heated debates that have lasted for a few decades now, is whether abortion should be allowed or not. Whether legally it is a woman’s choice or not; is it her right as a human being or blasphemy, of such magnitude that no amount of Hail Mary’s would be enough for the absolution. Typically, this debate, or rather fight, has been fought between the so called “science” and so called “religion”. The fight between religion and science is not a new one. It has been there since the birth…
9-22-13 Pols 155 Abortion Abortion is an issue that affects every person in one way or another; a friend or girlfriend could be faced with the decision of how to deal with an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy. Abortion is one of the most difficult and controversial moral issues considered today; it frequently leads the question of whether it should be legal or not. Individuals decide their stance of abortion depending on their beliefs regarding numerous religious and scientific ideas of life…
Thomson's View of Abortion In the article "A Defense of Abortion" Judith Jarvis Thomson argues that abortion is morally permissible even if the fetus is considered a person. In this paper I will give a fairly detailed description of Thomson main arguments for abortion. In particular I will take a close look at her famous "violinist" argument. Following will be objections to the argumentative story focused on the reasoning that one person's right to life outweighs another person's right to autonomy…
In this paper I will discuss the great moral dilemma of committing an abortion. This issue of whether having an abortion is morally justified has been very controversial to many people for a long time, and still continues to be one today. As a context to this argument we are given a story of Mrs. Adams and her husband who decided to have an abortion after a contraceptive method went wrong. After forgetting to take her contraceptive pill one night Mrs. Adams ends up getting pregnant, and because…
Abortion A. Jonathan Glover, in his article Matters of Life and Death casts dispersions on both pro-abortion and anti-abortion debates citing them as too knee-jerk emotional reactions diminishing the inherent complexity of the other side (1. Glover, CC2006, p. 0110). Glover comprehensively addresses the key points of both sides of the abortion debate and evaluates their inherent virtues, especially for those who hold these opinions, then methodically points out its flaws. Ultimately, Glover comes…
Colton Dowling 05/13/2015 Reading Journal 4 Judith Thompson 1. How is her "Violinist Analogy" supposed to relate to abortion? The Violinist Analogy relates to abortion, because the violinist’s life is dependent on his use of your kidneys. This is used to represent the dilemma that pregnant women are faced with should they get an abortion which would end the fetuses life...or not. Thompson relates how in the Violinist has not been granted the rights to use your kidneys, just as a fetus has not…
ABORTION IS A HARROWING ACT! In this assignment I am going to look at the moral aspect concerns on abortion during the development of the foetus (unborn), and how this has been perceived and criticized by individuals and philosophers. Abortion has been defined as the act that a woman performs in voluntarily terminating, or allowing another person to terminate her pregnancy and the legal status that is appropriate for this act (English 1975). Warren’s (1973) understanding of abortion however…
Erin Grogan Second Short Paper A Defense of Abortion In Judith Thomson’s paper Defense for Abortion, she provides examples that argue in favor of abortion to declare that it is permissible. Thomson states an implicit argument that she believes many philosophers presuppose. Premise one is that the fetus has a right to life. Premise two states that the mother has a right to say what happens to and in her body. Premise three says the fetus’ right to life outweighs the mother’s right to say what happens…
