In this situation I would first try to talk with my subordinates and try to figure out exactly why my emails are going unheeded and why I am having to speak to them face to face. I would ask direct questions to investigate whether the break down in communication and production is truly due to them being back logged or if it is due to complacency and laziness. If it is do to the fact that they are just that swapped, I would still go to my boss and suggest that we need to hire some extra hands even if it is just part-time. You never really know what the answer to any question until you ask it right? What’s the worse they could tell me, No? If the answer is yes then we would be starting a training class, but if the answer is no, the only thing I can actually do is jump in and lend a hand. The bottom line is one way or another it is still my responsibility that the orders get filled and the product gets out.

If I find that the breakdown has been caused due to complacency, I would suggest to my boss that we offer extra overtime hours or maybe some type of bonus or incentive for fastest average lead time or the most orders filled. With the extra pay hopefully the morale of my staff will be lifted and thus productivity will rise and orders will get filled. If I still get a no, then there again my only option is to be a leader and help out in my spare time even if I have to help out after hours. Also, I hope that with my assistance, I can help change attitudes to be a better,
