Title of Paper This essay will discuss 3 works of art by 3 different artist. The artists’ that was chosen are Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Peter Paul Rubens. It will discuss their art work similarities, meanings, and etc.
The first painting that will be discussed is The Calling of St. Matthew by Michelangelo. It shows Levi (St. Matthew’s name before he became the apostle) was at the table with four men counting money in the upper right of the painting. Christ enters with St. Peter and summons Levi. Levi gesture with his hand as if saying, “Who, me?”,with his other hand still on the coin. The two figures on the left were so concerns in counting the money they haven’t even realize Christ has entered the room, them not paying attention to Christ makes them miss their opportunity he offer, and condemns them to death. The work is of a particular style because it tells the story of how Levi (Matthew) becomes the apostle. Cardianl Matteu Contreil had left funds and specific instructions to decorate the chapel based on themes of his namesakeand that’s why he made the painting.
The second piece is the Resurrection of Christ by Rembrandt. It shows Christ standing behind the angel. The humans in the painting tumbled into a confused group below. Rembrandt painting the Resurrection of Christ because he received a commission from the court to create small versions of Rubens famous piece in Antwerp, the Raising of the Cross and the Descent from the Cross.
The art piece is by Peter Paul Rubens, the Massacre of the Innocents. It
