Gatsby produced a mysterious aura in the room when his name was brought up. From the beginning Nick Carraway heard of the popular man from strangers, which added to his curiosity. Daisy’s urgent demand of more information foreshadowed the reveal of their relationship. Also in this phrase, Tom Buchanan’s need to change the subject away from Gatsby’s name hinted that he was aware
“I’m right across from you.”

“So you are.”

The bay can show how literally and metaphorically close Gatsby is to being with Daisy, but yet so far away. She is always within Gatsby’s reach, but never solely his. They bay also divides the East Egg and West Egg. Tom and Daisy come from the East Egg, a group of nobleman, who view occupants of West Egg as foolish, uneducated, and immoral. Although both groups are fashionably rich, the East Egg occupants feel that those on the West Egg gained their wealth from boot-legging, rather than something honorable like stocks or politics. Tom feels the people at the party are below him for this reason, while Daisy is foolishly impressed by their status and looks. Gatsby, although worth millions, still works to prove to Daisy he is part of her elite lifestyle- for he was not fortunate enough to be born into that class. He obsesses over a false childhood history and changes every aspect of his life to be with Daisy.

“Her voice is full of money.”

That was it. I’d never understood before. It was full of money- that was the inexhaustible charm that rose and fell in it, the jingle of it, the cymbal’s song of it… High in a white palace the kings daughter, the golden girl…
