The American Dream is the happiness and material comfort earned in life which is usually yearned by citizens in the U.S. Too much money and materialistic items could lead to corruption. The 1920's or Roaring Twenties was a time of parties, drinking and having nothing but fun. Many people wished to be rich to be a part of the upper class. It was all in their American Dream. It almost seemed impossible unless being born into wealth. Although wealth doesn’t mean the American Dream has been reached. In The Great Gatsby .F. Scott Fitzgerald created characters that go by the name of Myrtle Wilson, George Wilson, and Jay Gatsby. All three tried achieving their own dreams in life but all failed in achieving their own life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

In The Great Gatsby, Myrtle’s American dream was to be with Tom Buchanan because she was not happy with George. Myrtle Wilson made an attempt to leave her old self in the town of ashes and pursue happiness with Tom. He brought Myrtle happiness because of the way she lived being with him. Benefits for the affair between Myrtle and Tom resulted in taking on his way of living in wealth, but by doing that she becomes unsatisfied with her life back with George. In the midst of Myrtle obtaining her dream she yearned to be Daisy, Mrs. Buchanan .Her constant clothing changes show that she is unhappy with her life, she changes personalities every time she changes her dress. Since Daisy wasn’t wealthy with George when she is with Tom she gets what she wants,“I want to get one of those dogs, she said earnestly” (27). She ends up gaining nothing and eventually dies. Daisy probably would have reached her American dream if she would’ve stayed with Tom and tried not to take the easy way out.

Although Myrtles American Dream didn’t seem too positive, George Wilson’s American dream appeared to have good business in his gas station / mechanic shop he owned, but most importantly to keep Myrtle happy. George thought he was doing a good job of making his wife happy until he realized she was having an affair. The pain caused by his dream was that Myrtle cheated which soon led to her accidental death. George was a wise man who could almost tell that Myrtle was having an affair. George looked up at the eyes staring down on them from the billboard one day and said, “I told her she might fool me but she couldn't fool God. I told her to look to the window, and said God knows what you've been doing, everything you've been doing. You may fool me, but you can't fool God (159)". As Myrtle’s husband ,there would be no way he can watch her every move so he told her god can see everything to make her think twice about what she’s doing. George would’ve gotten his American dream if he would’ve stopped welcoming
