Section 1: Understand how to communicate with a range of people
1. Use the box below to explain at least three forms of communication available for use.
As human beings communicating is something we always do, even in our silence. We can’t help it! It is what makes us fully human, but this fundamental or key aspect of being human requires careful attention and consideration.
Communication can be fulfilled through lots of different methods. The type of communication we choose will depend on what information/message it is we want to share (confidential, appointments or general chat) and individual needs (hard of hearing, visually impaired or different language). All different circumstances require different communication methods.
For example.
Verbal Communication: - While sitting at the bus-stop a lady asks me for directions to the nearest train station. I gave her directions telling her to keep walking straight ahead and to take her 2nd left onto Station Road and the train station is about a ¼ of a mile on the left.
Verbal Communication was the method used as I verbally/spoke, giving directions to the train station.
Verbal Communication is when information/message is shared by speech/words, this could be talking face to face with someone or over the telephone. This form of communication is the most commonly used method and by far the quickest form for information/message to reach the recipient/receiver.
Written Communication: - Could be a letter from a pen pal, text/email, hospital appointment & location directions or a newspaper/magazine. All of which convey the information/message in the form of written or typed words, which is called Written Communication.
For example.
While at work I noticed that a patient who is due an operation, needs to sign and date a consent form giving permission for the operation. So I typed up a letter to send the patient along with the consent form for her to sign.
The communication I chose was Written Communication as the information/message was a typed letter and also was a documented letter.
Non-Verbal Communication: - Is another method in which we can use to communicate with others and without speaking.
Non-Verbal Communication can be smiling, waving, body language and eye contact.
Non-Verbal Communication can also involve touch for example holding a person’s hand or a friendly pat on the back, send a message without using speech or written words. Like the saying “Actions speak louder than words”.
For example:-
At work today a new employee started, she was being shown round by the department manager. I remember when I first started and how nervous I was, when I saw her walk past I smiled at her, hopefully it will make her feel that it’s a friendly working environment, as she will be starting at the reception desk with me tomorrow.
Non-Verbal Communication was the type of communication I chose, as I couldn’t interrupt her introduction with the department manager. Communication can be as simple as a friendly smile!!
2. Using the table below, describe the range of people you might communicate with during your work in the health sector. Include at least 5 or 6 different examples. For each person you have identified, include a description of a situation
